How does Germany plan to attract skilled foreign workers? Germany is hoping to combat its shortage of skilled workers with a new ‘opportunity card’. The ‘chancenkarte’ will use a points system to enable workers with required skills to come to Germany more easily. It is part of a strategy proposed by Labour Minister Hubertus Heil to address the country’s labour shortages and is aimed at people who do not yet have a work contract in Germany. The points-based system will take into account qualifications, professional experience, age, German language skills and ties to Germany. Every year, quotas will be set depending on which industries need workers. Three out of four of the following criteria must also be met to apply for the scheme: A degree or vocational training Three years’ professional experience Language skills or a previous stay in Germany 35 years old or younger Currently, most non-EU citizens need to have a job offer before they can relocate to Germany. A visa for job seekers already exists, but the 'chancenkarte' is expected to make it easier and faster for people looking to find work in Germany. Courtesy : euronews.com

I went to the Renwick in DC this weekend, and one piece of art stood out: "This present moment used to be the unimaginable future." I often feel this way working in migration, as what is considered politically viable rapidly shifts in response to our changing demographic realities. Seeing our work Labor Mobility Partnerships (LaMP) prominently featured as a lead story on Channels Television is one of those unimaginable moments. Jason Wendle did a brilliant job of overviewing why a dramatically more mobile world is not only a desirable path to expanding opportunity, but also a practical matter of necessity. These ideas that were once considered utopian are now seen by news outlets like this one as meriting serious consideration. Even the U.S. Department of State is moving this direction: in another previously unimaginable moment, last week Secretary Blinken announced work together with Mexico and Guatemala to expand legal channels for migration. As rewarding as it is to watch the broad consensus shift in line with our vision, we at LaMP are already at work to build this more mobile world in practice. Imagine you leave your family to build up a country after the (second) World War. You arrive in a country where you can't speak the language and don't know the culture - but you are here, for a better future - because your country is not safe for your children and has no perspectives. In the 1950s and 60s, Germany experienced rapid economic growth; Due to labor shortages, guest workers from various countries such as Turkey, Greece, Italy, former Yugoslavia & Spain were crucial for rebuilding and modernizing Germany after the Second World War. These guest workers, who mostly are fathers and mothers of so many culturally diverse people here in Germany - contributed to alleviating labor shortages in certain industries and helped enable economic growth. They impacted our German society with their culture, leading to increased cultural diversity. NOW: We enjoyed decades of economic growth through workforce support, and diversity that leads to more innovation & learning from other cultures; can better balance demographical issues and kill skill gaps in key industries; now act as a humanitarian leader - while fueling war by selling military in the e.g. Middle East- and failing with politics in times of integration. We wonder why so many people flee "to our wonderful Germany" - and don't get that we contribute to the problem itself: selling military that leads to endless wars, climate crisis & extreme weather events because of our climate policy. We are part of the problem. After all these facts (didn't even name all of them), I'm more than ashamed, to read that Member of Germany's AFD discussed a deportation "masterplan" for people living here, who are "not enough assimilated", and/or who are migrants, asylum seekers, and/or even have a german citizenship - should be forcefully returned to their countries of origin if they are not fitting into "Deutsche Leitkultur". According to CORRECTIV - who wrote this investigative, incredibly good report - deportations to an unnamed state in northern Africa that would provide space for up to 2 million people would be a good solution "to solve the problem". FYI - Remigration is not only deportation - but also pressuring people with other cultural backgrounds to assimilate themselves into the German "Leitkultur". That would affect millions of people here. Including so many people in my community here; your family, friends - including me and my family. I'm using my network and this post to show awareness and spread the word. You will find articles in the comment sections. #raiseawareness #racism #politics #germany #AFD #culture

We were delighted to participate in a EU / China webinar which took place on 12 June 2024. Partner and head of our Employment team in Ireland, Karen Killalea, moderated a panel of international employment lawyers examining how employers can successfully attract and retain talent, handle change and integration programmes and tackle disruption in the workplace. These employment lawyers from across Europe and China contributed to a diverse and vibrant discussion on the challenges and successes of doing business and managing people in Europe and in China. We looked at some of the key considerations in terms of consulting with employee representative bodies, European Works Councils and trade unions with some great insights on trends in Germany. We learned about the labour law framework in China and key considerations which should guide the implementation of workforce changes. Our colleagues from France, Spain and Italy talked about the nuances to conducting workplace investigations. The UK perspective on everything from gender pay gap reporting, to whistleblowing, collective consultation and workplace investigations was shared with us as part of the panel discussion.
