The answer to Clue #3 is... Beetlejuice! Here's why we chose it. 1988 - The spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out. What is there to say about Beetlejuice? It’s chaotic, unpredictable, and bursting with energy—kind of like imagining a hacker with a flair for the dramatic (aka - Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice.) For cybersecurity awareness month, let’s focus on Beetlejuice in his massive sandworm form. In cyber, worms are a relic of the past, but just like in the movie, they’re still lurking beneath the surface, waiting for their chance to strike. Don’t let your guard down–worms may be old news, but they remain a real threat for lateral movement and system reconnaissance. 👉 Good news regarding our Cyber Awareness Month Cipher: Though there was no winner for Day 1, today's winner will receive double the prize! If you guessed The Cabin in the Woods to Cipher Clue #2, you're correct! This film is about a group of kids who go to a remote cabin in the woods where their fate is unknowingly controlled by technicians as part of a world-wide conspiracy where all horror movie clichés are revealed to be part of an elaborate sacrifice ritual. 💡 Here's why we chose it: The Cabin in the Woods turns horror tropes on their head while still respecting classic rules. In cybersecurity, it is easy to fall into the same trap–the corporation believed they built a resilient system with the three groups, only to be blindsided by unforeseen gaps. Similarly, the kids thought they were safe, but they were not. Remember, confidence in our defenses is good, but overconfidence can leave us vulnerable. It’s about staying vigilant, no matter how well-prepared we think we are. The answer to Clue #1 is... The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993 - Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion. Here's why we chose it. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween classic where distinct worlds collide–sometimes accidentally, sometimes intentionally. Similar to cybersecurity, we need to think about how different environments, systems, and assets are interconnected, both in ways we anticipate and in ways we don’t. Lateral movement is like Jack wandering into Christmas Town–unexpected but made possible by overlooked links. During Cybersecurity Awareness Month, focus on lateral movement between systems either from known lines of connection or think about how accidental connections could be made when something isn’t done exactly right, or an expected workflow not followed. After all, a small misstep could open a doorway to something entirely unintended. 📣 It's officially Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we've got your mix of spooky, ciphers, and cyber awareness! 👇 Join us for the next 10 days for our #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth Cipher, where you can follow along each day and use the clues to solve the secret cipher at a chance for a prize. Here's how it works: Each day, a clue will be shared here on LinkedIn. The answer to the clue is the title of a famous Halloween film that we will tie back to a cybersecurity awareness concept. Within the clue, there will be two bolded numbers. 1️⃣ The first number indicates which word in the movie title to focus on. 2️⃣ The second number specifies which letter in that word to use. If there is only one bolded number, that means the movie title is only 1 word and that letter is part of the cipher answer. 👉 See the example in the image below! Check the comments for the answer & cyber awareness tie-in! Each day, one randomly chosen participant who guesses correctly will win a prize. We will kick it off with our first clue tomorrow morning. Be sure to follow Deepwatch and check back daily for your next clue. Good luck! #Halloween
