Shoes. Yes, this post is about shoes. 👟 👠 👡
I took this picture in a shopping mall on Orchard Road in my recent trip to Singapore. 🇸🇬 For those of you who don't know, Orchard Road is the heart of shopping in Singapore and where the international brands (ie. LV, Chanel etc) have their flagship stores. It is like Oxford Street in London (but posher, in my opinion).
It may seem odd in the West but the taking off of shoes 🐾 is normal and expected when visiting someone's home in Southeast Asia notwithstanding the protestations to the contrary by the host. Here, the picture is at a beauty salon offering a range of treatment (I was just passing by, no really!) but it is given the same respect as a home.
Most people understand that there are nuances to culture and values. But when it comes to business, it's tempting to simplify. Businesses just want to make money, right? So, culture and values have nothing to do with doing business, right? Perhaps. But in Southeast Asia, understanding culture and values is key to long term success.
