With the Hollywood model in deep disarray there is zero chance that streamers are going to replace traditional Canadian broadcasters as commissioners of shows. Even more ludicrous is the idea that they will create and champion world-beating content that’s authentically Canadian. We are destined to be a backwater for original work. Service productions will still keep the production industry going as long as tax breaks and currency make business sense, but talented actors, writers and directors will have to get visas for the US or find other jobs. To the degree that English Canada cares about the loss of screen culture we might have some pockets of funding left, but Bell pulling out of TIFF is surely a sign that corporations and politicians no longer have appetite for supporting a largely Toronto-based elite, their parties and jobs. The best we can hope for is a show like “Mayor of Kingstown” - where Hugh Dillon channels a fever dream of Kingston into a show transplanted into Michigan, run by a US hit maker like Taylor Sheridan. There isn’t an easy fix - these shows cost millions and our market can’t support them alone. But it’s depressing to see how every major cultural industry, from publishing to broadcast, has lost to ability to finance and promote our stories.

Interesting article about drawbacks in digital streaming. They can remove a movie or song even after you pay for it. Also, they can edit/delete/change the contents. Your subscription pays for access to the content but you do not own the medium. When you have a DVD on your shelf, the streaming platforms cannot take back the contents. So, it seems the old-school way has its benefits. (And Blu-ray does not suffer through compression or bandwidth restrictions.) https://lnkd.in/edhBZEPV

💎If you're pitching correctly, you've done your research and are attempting to fulfill a specific need for a potential client. In these situations you want to always put your BEST foot forward, so aim for opportunities that allow you to showcase your SPECIALTY. 💎I know... you can produce multiple genres. However... there's one that you're simply a BEAST at, right? That makes you a SPECIALIST! Promote yourself as such. 💎Once you get in the door and show your work ethic, you WILL get opportunities to show what else you can do! Original music is essential to storytelling. In a moment in history where big tech pushes unexpensive massive solutions for communication, securing budgets for man-made things like original soundtracks for smaller productions become harder and harder. Of course, there are composers and composers, and the convenience and speed of using a library track has its benefits. But I invite you to watch this trailer, graded by my beloved Walter Volpatto, and to listen. Messages really fly with images, but the power that the score by Hanan Townshend has to evoke feeling is staggering, and it is often overlooked. The ability to condense in few seconds pure narrative power is something that only music can make.

“The medium is the message”-Marshall McLuhan, communication theorist & philosopher💡 A #trend that’s slowly changed before our eyes 👁️👁️: Physical media 💿 to streaming📱 Best Buy and Target are phasing out blu ray and dvd sales next month for obvious reasons📉 Yet… “Some of our industry's biggest #filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst #streaming service”-Christopher Nolan✍🏻 Also: “When Google & Meta eat up half of digital ad #revenue, that means: 1)Fewer advertisers for streamers (and therefore less revenue for studios to share with writers)🍎 2)The enemy of the WGA writers isn't studios but #bigtech. Nobody brings a taller pile of Benjamins or a stronger stomach to risk it, than Big Tech. Apple, Netflix and Amazon now dominate #Hollywood. And what did they bring? Cheaper capital 💰” -Scott Galloway📈 Yes media technologies evolve, money talks and this is all beyond our control📺 But Does convenience, accessibility, variety and #algorithmic personalization come with #privacy and #security costs? Streaming platforms collect personal #data from users (viewing history, preferences, ratings and feedback) to improve services/personalize content but also to sell for #advertising, #marketing or profiling💵 Data for 3rd parties such as advertisers, partners or governments can also be hacked or breached exposing users’ data to unauthorized or malicious parties🏴☠️ Streaming can modify or remove content: “Fawlty Towers is set to be reinstated on a BBC-owned streaming service” https://lnkd.in/gsZRbG4Y “HBO Max Removes ‘Gone With the Wind’ From Streaming Platform, Says Film Will Return With “Discussion Of Its Historical Context” (won 8 Oscars, including the first Oscar ever awarded to a black person: Hattie McDaniel) https://lnkd.in/gQTUSUKA Physical media does not🔒 Certain movies would have not been considered a success or even made today based on requirements and constraints of streaming🔮 Take one film as an example📖 Stephen King was allegedly paid $5,000 for the royalities on his original work with some alluding that he wanted to get the #story out for the director/screenwriter Frank Darabont who also filmed another short story of King’s (this movie is considered by many as a top movie of all time)🎞️ -nominated for 7 academy awards👑 -was not a box office success, making money from vhs & tv (had another round of success and longevity)📼 -all star cast & design team lead by Terry Marsh with one of the best cinematographer’s of all time in Roger Deakins also key factors🎥 That movie is Shawshank Redemption🔗 Marshall McLuhan also said “art is anything you can get away with”🖼️ #obsolete #irrelevant📼#valuable #alternatives💿#ownership #control🎞️
