One day before the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we published this new H-Diplo State of the Field Roundtable on the Eastern European Settlements during the Second World War: Making the Peace Amidst the War. https://lnkd.in/dJMD8iih Introduction by Warren F. Kimball, Rutgers University, Emeritus; Essays by Andrew Buchanan, University of Vermont, Wilson D. Miscamble, C.S.C., University of Notre Dame, David Reynolds, University of Cambridge, Mark A. Stoler, University of Vermont Concluding thoughts by Priscilla Roberts, University of St. Joseph, Macau. *** From the introduction: "This H-Diplo Roundtable focuses on the nature and effects of the military and political decisions that resulted in the 'settlements' in/for Eastern Europe after World War II. Why is this topic interesting and worth our time and effort? I would suggest that while counterfactual suppositions are more than just good fun for historians, examining them now that we have the bulk of the documentary evidence in hand gives us a chance to assess what I have clumsily labeled 'The Second World War Sell-Out.' David Reynolds helped prompt me to suggest this roundtable. The final phrases of his essay capture what I hope we all have tried to address: 'A Sovietised eastern Europe was, in part, the price of how Allied victory was won. This remains one of the troubling moral questions about the "Good War....."

This Veterans Day, I invite you to check out "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents" by Isabel Wilkerson. One of the most egalitarian tenets of the military is its rank-based hierarchy. We aspire to be a true meritocracy, agnostic of race, ethnicity, or gender—and for the most part that is true. But I did not know about the blatant racism during WWII where black Soldiers were marginalized by their white American peers while foreign counterparts (the French!) treated them as equals. Then these black service members were denied U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits introduced by the 1944 GI Bill. Black veterans were not aided in adjusting back to civilian life—no VA home loans, no college education. This further exacerbated inequality with lost generational wealth opportunities. But not everyone took the snub from Uncle Sam as his fate. My neighbor served in WWII. He was in the US Army Signal Corps and climbed towers to catch enemy transmissions. As a former US Navy Signals Intelligence Officer myself, I knew exactly how critical his work was to saving our troops. I was saddened to hear that he threw away his medals in frustration. He channeled that anger into building his family estate, amassing wealth through purchasing and rehabilitating distressed properties. His daughter is now taking care of him as he approaches 98. Today, I salute him. --- It is important to understand our history, including our ugly parts, as we climb that hill. --- #veteransday #americandream #americanhistory https://lnkd.in/gYRbT5bN

A few key takeaways from Georgia's recently released 5 year broadband plan! 💠Anticipated total investment of $1.8 billion to $2.4 billion, including both State-administered BEAD funds and subrecipient matching funds, will enable the goal of universal service at all remaining unserved and underserved locations by the end of 2028 💠The timeline assumes the administration of a two-round subrecipient selection process for the State’s BEAD allocation deployment. 💠FCC broadband data indicates 119,278 addresses (approximately 3.2 percent) are unserved – below 25/3 Mbps. 74,934 addresses (approximately 2 percent) are underserved – 25/3 Mbps or higher but below 100/20 Mbps
Check out the state's newly released five-year plan for expanding broadband and connecting Georgians. Says Jessica Simmons, Deputy CIO and Executive Director of the Georgia Broadband Program: "This action plan details our vision for ensuring that reliable and affordable access is available throughout our state."

If USA Businesses, DOD, and other US Government Organizations would focus on their Mission, Vision, and Charter Statements rather than DEI, CRT, Division, and Equity, with the limited available resources, how great can they be? When we lose focus, do we tend to waste resources when we lose our sight of purpose? Leveraging, paraphrasing P.J. Fleck, do the personnel resources quit rowing or rowing simultaneously due to the division, divisiveness, alienation? Diversity of Thought, Equality of Opportunity, and Inclusiveness of Skill, Aptitude, and Desire permit success with suboptimal resources!

These are thoughts that must be explored, for the sake of the common good, as well as our common sea lanes of communication and trade (not to mention undersea cables), much of which goes through the Pacific. The devil is in the details, but I have often said that NATO should become the North Atlantic/Asian Treaty Organization.

"And that team includes our partners — whether in our many courses in Joint Special Operations University or the 28 nations right in our headquarters, as well as the numerous SOF relationships we have around the globe." We can see a real world application of this "power" at work (against us) on our own soil as malign actors have influenced our own citizens to co-opt their beliefs and highjack vulnerable college campuses to plant the seeds of terror. Use your enemy's indigenous disenfranchised populations and resources as a combat multiplier, save your resources, and minimize the manpower needed. Example: Of a protesting and disrupting group, 20% may be outside malign actors and they can control the other 80% of "indigenous" students willing to participate for whatever reason; believe in the cause, just want to go along with the crowd, getting praise from mentors, get out of finals, just want to destroy property, don't really care about school, etc. Reverse that in our favor and that's the "Power of Partnership" whether we value the actual relationship or just a means to an end to support our national security and strategic outcome. Malign actors have been nurturing and slow simmering our most vulnerable populations (college students) for decades. If we don't give our children something to believe in that is rooted in their red, white, and blue bones, others will find a way to manipulate this lost [free radical] citizen. Then it is up to "society" and our institutions to protect this believe with swift and resolute action. Contrast the campus protests at various schools and how each handled the attempt to gain a foothold. On some campuses an environment was allowed to slowly and incrementally test the waters and push back "bed time" by several hours. On other campuses it was a swift spanking and "get your a$$ to bed" without hesitation. One of these courses of action lead to significant disruption, damage, and an unsafe environment for many; a win for the agitating malign opposition.

#JFK was shot en route to the Dallas Trade Mart to give a speech on the importance of maintaining America’s comprehensive strength across many dimensions of national power. Have you ever read it? If so, I think you’ll agree it’s never been more relevant. Unfortunately, whether we recognize it or not, we’ve failed to maintain the kind of strength he describes as critical to upholding America’s position & mission in the world. An American President in the early 1960s could credibly commit to “pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival & the success of liberty”, but the game has changed. We now face the long & arduous task of rebuilding our comprehensive strength & regaining our diplomatic leverage while somehow deterring larger attacks on the USA & our core interests. In the meantime, we & our Allies are tempting the enemy Axis with near-comprehensive weakness. As President Kennedy intended to say on November 22, 1963, “If we are strong, our strength will speak for itself. If we are weak, words will be of no help.” America now requires not words but action.
Remarks Prepared for Delivery at the Trade Mart in Dallas, TX, November 22, 1963 [Undelivered]
