MEd.GrdCrt.BEd Specialisations:SSEN,SAER,ECE, Neurodiversity & Disabilities Interests: Educational Leadership, Culture & Wellbeing, Educator Empowerment, Inclusive Education, Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Universal Design for Learning does not mean "sameness" or "equality" for all. Rather, it means to implement and provide a range of alternatives and choices to increase equitable access, participation and success for all. UDL philosophy embraces individuality and 'presumes competence'. On the other end of the 'spectrum ' so to speak - from an organisational point of view, implementing the UDL approach and embracing the UDL philosophy may be an initial challenge if the only question being asked is "How much money is this going to cost?". The real questions should be: "How much money will we lose?", "Will these expenditures help support inclusivity and diversity in our organisation?", "How will this reduce the need for additional costly supports"?, "How much value do we place on ourselves and our people?" and "Is this a matter of short term pain for long term gain".
Although UDL does not guarantee that every barrier will be removed for all students, it does lessen the number of supports required and provides access to content that is often otherwise inaccessible, especially for students with disabilities (King- Sears et al., 2022).
