Wise words from my 13 year old! The spotlight was firmly on UK A level results yesterday, and with my mum hat on, I was celebrating the achievement of my eldest and her acceptance to university. However, with my DEI hat on, I'm acutely aware of the focus on grades, without any way to measure 'tenacity' or privilege that provides the environment for academic attainment. For sure my daughter worked consistently hard. She also had: - a stable and nuturing family to come home to - no periods of absence - no physical or mental health struggles - no 'adult' responsibilities - a school that ensured the curriculum was covered, that didn't face disruption, disjointed supply teaching, or classroom distractions - a positive circle of friends who encouraged each other. Wouldn't it be enlightening to have a 'tenacity factor' which was a multiplier to the raw exam results, as a measure of true achievement. Have this in mind as you recruit, shortlist, or otherwise decide who to back, as it is truly those who have shown tenacity, who will go furthest in life, if given an opportunity with an apprenticeship, angel funding, work experience, mentoring or otherwise a door opened. You'll find it is those people with greatest tenacity who will be strongest by your side as you ride the scale up rollercoaster! #RewardEffort #Attitude #SchoolLeavers #Inclusion #Privilege

It's an exciting time to be in the education industry now that schools are FINALLY addressing the ROI of education by incorporating CAREER EXPLORATION and PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT into their core classes and programs. If students don't see a viable roadmap for themselves, feel able to achieve bigger opportunities in life, let alone equity, many question WHY bother with advanced education. Exploring Your Potential (EYP) is proud to work with schools that prioritize whole student development. Like @LanderUniversity. 50% don't have a plan. But with EYP 90 % do. Here @HalleMichael one of our favorite recent students beautifully articulates how this focused training layer helped her build resilience, longer term goals, social support, leadership and materialize her entrepreneurial aspirations. "EYP encourages you to grow outward, by looking inward." If you know or work with a school that could use support in building confidence, clarity, focus, and direction with their students, please get in touch! #LanderUniversity #workforcereadiness #highered #AACSB #undergradbizschool #businesseducation #studentoutcomes #economicequity

What an incredible week! My cup is full of energy and excitement for all of the amazing work in the city related to work integrated learning, experiential learning, student talent, strategic partnerships, and community building. Here's why: ✔ It started with a wonderful, engaging, and insightful lunch conversation with Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), one of the post-secondary partners of TalentED YYC. We had a great discussion about community building, and it was a very positive, forward-looking chat. ✔ The grand opening of the Open Learning Lab (OLL)! TalentED YYC is proud to be a Sponsor and Community Partner of the OLL David J. Finch, PhD and of the synergies between some of TalentED YYC's post-secondary partners Bow Valley College, University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, Alberta University of the Arts. I had amazing conversations with industry and students. You could feel the energy, excitement, and desire to have meaningful opportunities for all stakeholders. A panelist suggested that Calgary should not have the goal of being the "best in the world" but to be "the best for the world." ✔ Bow Valley College's TechTalent event celebrating the launch of Apprenticeship-Style work integrated learning in their Software Development and Digital Design diploma programs. As I was involved in the initial planning of this new WIL type, it was exciting to see it come to fruition. It was also exciting to see so many employers come to the table looking for student talent and believing in the incredible benefits students offer to employers. Dan Olesen Veronica Mendoza Derek Lemieux ✔ Wrapping up with a catch-up with former colleagues about all things work integrated learning, career development, and student talent. It is an EXCITING time to be in this space in Calgary; I am very hopeful when I think about the future of WIL and talent in the city. #talentedyyc #communitybuilding #yyc #talent #calgary #communitylearning #students #transforminglearning
