When I became a sailor a couple of years ago, I started somehow look for a connection between what I do and what I adore.
So I almost thoroughly learned all the production process technology of monohulls (standard monohull Lazer type).
This was easy since it was same thermoforming that I had been familiar with for many years working in the automotive industry.
Of course, last century hulls (either monohulls or cruise ones) have remained far behind the carbon light-weight boats of nowadays that have rather moved into the category of a rocket science.
But classic always be a classic.
Nevertheless, not so long ago while visiting one of our suppliers, we were discussing some tooling know-how, and suddenly I realised that we are talking about Persico, which is the famous supplier for the American Cup’s foil arms and also its legendary Luna Rossa boat builder.
But the story is not about how amazing it is when work intertwines with adoration.
Here it’s about the America's Cup, which takes place in the Red Sea, on the coast of Saudi Arabia this November.
By the way, the boats in this region have been around for a centuries.
It is a very old gulf tradition of "Dhow" (داو).
The word "Dhow" comes from the Swahili tongue (East African area).
It means a “wooden boat” with latin righing, sailing along the coastline under the monsoon winds.
Historians also share that “dhows” were invented by either the Arabs or the Indians, and were originally fishing, pearling, or trading vessels, also used to transport slaves and some goods in the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and the Gulf.
Today you can also hear about “Dhow racing”, which sheds light on the ancient maritime history of the region.
This is one of the most enchanting performances that combines history and modernity.
Nevertheless, in this November, modernity will be represented there by the second Preliminary Regatta of American Cup.
The countdown is on for the second Preliminary Regatta of the 37th America’s Cup with the Red Sea city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia getting ready to host the world’s finest foiling sailors from the 29th of November through to the 2nd of December 2023.
