Interim VP of Infrastructure & Sustainability / Innovator / Thought Leader / Entrepreneur / Consultant
December was an action-packed month. The City of Atlanta had a couple water outages on our campus. Hats off to the City for their quick response. We also had the largest planned chilled water outage on the campus in over 30 years. Aging infrastructure is the cause of many utility failures. It is common in municipalities and campuses all over the USA. Because of the hard work of many people including William Varnado and his team, Greg Spiro P.E., LEED AP, CEM and his team, Catherine Brim and the communications team and Will Smith and the emergency management team, countless future emergencies have been avoided. It is not to say that we will not have any more failures, but new valves been installed in places and critical preemptive repairs have been made. It just increases our odds in a positive way! All in all, the outage was a success. The projects finished ahead of schedule and we were able to get additional information to plan for future work. All of this takes a team. A special thanks to Maria Cimilluca and Shantay B. for supporting this outage. Thank you Juan Camilo Archila and others that are a part of the research team. Thanks again to Zach Worley and the building managers, Jammie Gaines and the maintenance teams, and all the others that played a role. Difficult decisions should never be avoided but they should always be well planned. Planning is a critical element to accomplish your goals. You must be able to prioritize, understand contingencies, and be ready to execute well. If I had avoided things because they were difficult, I would have never graduated from Georgia Tech. Great things often take hard work, and I am excited that we have a team that comes together when most needed. Thanks again to all that were a part of the successful chilled water outage. #maintenance #engineering #infrastructure #chilledwater #finance #engineering #construction #analytics #communication #landscaping #it

Check out our article on McCarthy Building Companies, a new approach to water and wastewater project construction from our March issue. The oldest privately held national construction company in the United States, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., has been collaborating with partners to solve complex building challenges for more than 150 years. McCarthy’s water team focuses on the collaborative delivery of large, complex water and wastewater projects. Its preferred delivery methods bring the contractor together with the client and engineer early in the process so that the team can review constructability, look for cost savings, anticipate any challenges, and find solutions—all before construction starts. In this interview, Municipal Water Leader speaks with Sarah Espinosa, a design integration manager, and Chad Wolfe, a senior project director, both of whom are part of McCarthy’s national water team and serve in its central region, about how McCarthy’s collaborative delivery approach has brought benefits to two municipal system projects in the Midwest. https://bit.ly/4a3U7Kc #McCarthyBuildingCompanies #WaterInfrastructure #Construction #WaterProjects #Wastewater #CollaborativeDelivery #ProjectManagement #WaterIndustry

So what was Project Manager Ian up to? ‘We were trying to find a hidden stream that passes underground near one of our sites in Scotland. The only way to find the hidden stream was to walk up the river which we did wearing waders. We successfully found the stream and were able to start monitoring it.’ All in the line of duty. #EnglobeUK #Englobe #GreatPlaceToWork #ProudOfOurWork #Remediation #Remediationcontractor #SoilTreatmentFacilities #BrownFieldContracting #EnablingWorks #IntegratedEnvironmentalServices #InfrastructureProjects #CivilEngineering #SocialValue

#Throwback to the outstanding recognition we received for the achievements of the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority! 🌟 We are providing construction management services for the transformative #PWSA system project, which includes eliminating and replacing lead service lines and installing new water lines throughout PWSA’s drinking water service area. Here are some of the positive outcomes from the project: ➡️Successfully replaced more than 10,778 public and 7,578 private lead water lines since 2016, resulting in a significant decrease in lead levels. ➡️Significantly dropped lead levels to a historic low of 3.58 parts per billion, from 15 parts per billion in 2016, which had prompted federal action. ➡️Recognized for its success by US vice president, Kamala Harris, during an award of over $32 million to Pittsburgh, emphasizing the importance of water infrastructure improvements for public health. These outcomes underscore Hatch and PWSA’s shared, steadfast commitment to pursuing a better world through #positivechange.
