Over the past eight years, migration from cities to regional areas has increased threefold across Australia [Regional Australia Institute, Big Movers 2023, p.6]. Softening the edges of the cost-of-living crisis, regional hubs can offer improved wellbeing, housing affordability and more time for what matters. Alongside a growing dissatisfaction with city living, these key drivers are boosting internal migration and prompting businesses to strengthen their approach to regional connection. For organisations with headquarters in the CBD and multiple regional locations, how do we encourage an aligned sense of purpose and a commitment to connection across all team locations? This month we will explore the role of organisational culture, career development and workplace equity in regional sites. We’ll focus on what connects teams and their customers when distance has the potential to isolate. #davenportcampbell #workplacedesign #workplacestrategy #regionalshift #rejuvenation #teamconnection #culture #equity

How can public transport ensure equity and inclusivity in the wake of hybrid working? Hybrid working is here to stay. For some, this has become the norm, however occupation type, income and relative social advantage all strongly relate to the ability to work from home. Our report ‘Equitable public transport in a hybrid working world’ analyses work from home patterns in Adelaide and Perth in 2021 and presents four recommendations to achieve impactful outcomes so everyone can access transport services when they need to. 1. Align vision and objectives early to guide investment towards equality 2. Change how we measure transport projects to capture holistic outcomes 3. Act early in suburban residential growth areas 4. Provide decentralised access to cover more areas in suburbs Download the report to learn more: https://bit.ly/3tMaviw #Transport #TransportPlanning #WFH

It’s fantastic to see our latest research on the Hardest Working Cities in Australia hit the newsstands this week 👏 Turns out the hardest working place in Australia is the North Sydney/Hornsby region – unsurprising, since that’s where Reckon is based 😂 #iykyk All jokes aside, we all know Aussies are some of the hardest-working people in the world, but it’s interesting to see that play out in our analysis of ABS data. For one thing, the hardest working capital is Darwin – beating out even Sydney for its impressive productivity and potential workers scores, though New South Wales as a whole consistently had some of the hardest working regions in the country, mainly due to long commute times 🚘 As GM of People & Culture, I love seeing people give what they’ve got to their workplace, but never at the expense of their well-being. It’s good to have a healthy balance of what this data means for employees. Is the “grind set” a source of pride or concern? What do you take away from it? It was great to have a small part in this research of Adelaide and my childhood city of Perth. Not surprisingly, our research finds that the trend towards hybrid working has not impacted everyone equally and that the ability to work from home is strongly linked to occupation type, income and level of socio-economic advantage. Building on this, in both Perth and Adelaide, we see that those who have high levels of socio-economic advantage are also likely to have high levels of public transport access to jobs. Over the last few years, people in these communities are likely to have effectively gained another convenient commuting option (i.e. working from home). Conversely, people in communities of relative disadvantage, are less likely to be able to work from home and continue to have reduced transport choice for jobs (e.g. lower public transport accessibility). This highlights that the trend in hybrid work is widening the gap in accessibility between those with and without social-economic advantage. This is particularly the case when we consider digital connectivity alongside transport and land use systems. This increasing gap should influence how we prioritise transport funding - i.e. more funding for PT in general - but also how we prioritise funding across our public transport networks. As we adapt to cities of hybrid working, we should perhaps be less focused on increasing central city radial services and instead focus on areas with lower public transport accessibility and reduced potential to work from home. It should also shape how we can reallocate resources through efficiency initiatives such as bus network reform (e.g. reallocating some funding to orbital services and growth areas). Most of us love where we live but it's always good to see what's going on in other towns and cities. See how the Scottish cities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow compared to each other and to the wider UK as a whole. The #GoodGrowth for Cities report from PwC UK measures a raft of things which are important to people like the affordability of homes, work/life balance, the environment and more. Usual good research by JLL. They asked a bunch of managers what their reasons were for getting their staff back in to the office. They had a lot of good ones(see below). I add: the average return to work in Asia-Pacific is 85% (with Melbourne in the survey at just over 50% and Sydney 60 %; Brisbane is in the mid 70s) whereas it's only 55% in the US. Seems obvious to me that if you accept these reasons and if staff-attendance in 'western' cities is simply nowhere near Asian city levels, then the productivity of the latter will prevail over the former. Or does productivity not matter any more economically in comparison with Happiness'? Some people react as though it's cruel to get people back to the work in their offices. Public sector attendance is shocking in the UK and Australia four years on from the advent of the pandemic, well below the averages in this survey: and anyone who thinks service quality has not suffered needs their noggin read. #city #economics Bill DurodieJames WoudhuysenFrank Furedi

I'm curious. What are your thoughts about the fact that London, England and Ottawa, Canada have now appointed a 'night czar' Amy Lamé to 'ensure London thrives as a 24 hour city" and a 'night life commissioner' Mathieu Grondin to "develop the night time economy". I suppose it recognizes that we are increasingly becoming a 24/7 world even beyond the critical sectors that usually operate 24/7. #sleep #nightwork #shiftwork #healthandwellness #humanresources
