Amazon Web Services plans to invest $11 billion in Indiana Amazon Web Services plans to invest $11 billion in Indiana, creating 1,000 new jobs and marking the most significant capital investment in the state's history. With Governor Eric Holcomb and IEDC support, AWS will build new data centers in St. Joseph County. AWS plans to contribute up to $7 million to support road infrastructure improvements in the state and local community surrounding its planned development. Amazon has invested $21.5 billion in Indiana since 2010, creating 26,000 jobs and contributing $19.8 billion to the state's GDP. The company also supports local communities by enabling four solar and wind farms, providing over 600 megawatts of renewable energy. AWS is launching the AWS InCommunities St. Joseph County Community Fund, a grant program supporting STEM education, sustainability, economic development, workforce development, inclusion, diversity, and homelessness. Amazon understands that building data centers in communities is the best way to help the local community. Data centers are resource-intensive and require considerable energy, so investing in renewables enables local communities to access the power without needing additional resources from local governments. #aws #indiana #data-center #investment https://lnkd.in/gG6pMWer

🏭 EcDev Newsflash: Indiana Gets Another Massive Capital Commitment From Amazon For Its Data Center Operation 🏭 Many in the site selection community know Indiana is emerging as a significant hub for data center investments, drawing major tech companies to commit billions to development projects within the state. Amazon Web Services (AWS) just a few weeks ago announced an $11 billion investment for new data centers in St. Joseph County, which is part of a broader commitment by the tech giant that totals over $21 billion in the state since 2010. Google previously committed $2 billion investment planned for a data center in Fort Wayne, enhancing local STEM education and adding clean energy to the grid. Meta is also contributing with an $800 million investment to construct a large data center in Jeffersonville. Amazon’s investment will contribute to creating 1,000 jobs and also come with an additional $7 million contribution to support road infrastructure improvements being built by the state and local community surrounding the company’s planned development, as well as well as the launch of the AWS InCommunities St. Joseph County Community Fund, a grant program aimed at supporting initiatives focused on six key themes: science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) education. In addition to the excellent work of Indiana’s economic development apparatus, the state's strategic central location, coupled with robust connectivity and power availability, make it an attractive choice for these hyperscalers. Indiana’s appeal is further bolstered by a thoughtful and ambitious economic incentives program, including a data center sales tax exemption and the Indiana Economic Development Rider, offering substantial energy cost savings. Also worth noting that local site developments are certainly not just limited to these tech giants. The new Digital Crossroads of America Data Center, a smaller-scale project costing $40 million, is underway on the Indiana-Illinois border. This facility will include innovative features like a tech incubator and a greenhouse heated by the data center’s cooling infrastructure. These projects collectively underscore Indiana's growing importance as a central node in America’s data center geography, promising extensive economic growth and job creation for the region. Technology Infrastructure is what makes the world go 'round. Amazon to invest $10 Billion to build two data center complexes in the state of Mississippi, creating 1,000 jobs, and representing the single largest capital investment that has ever been made in the state of Mississippi. MS making strides! (https://lnkd.in/ggcfzgvi) Where does the internet come from? Where is data stored? That would be a DATA CENTER, a building (like in the photo below) that can house millions (if not billions) of gigabytes of data. Data centers can be private, or shared among multiple tenants, but all data has to be stored somewhere. Even "cloud computing" requires a physical building to house data. The internet is a connection between you and a data center somewhere (maybe soon in MS).

The evolution of Central Ohio as a hub for data centers continues, according to this article from Columbus Business First. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has purchased yet more land in the Columbus Region. "When you look at the scale of investment, it's going to require a number of additional campuses," Shannon Kellogg, vice president of public policy for AWS, previously said. "I don't have a specific number, but when you're talking about nearly $8 billion of additional investment, you're talking about several new locations." "... [A]n AWS spokesperson confirmed that the company is looking for additional spots to build its data center campuses. "Over the last five years, AWS has acquired more than 1,100 acres in Central Ohio. ... AWS has invested $6.3 billion in Central Ohio since first entering the market in 2015." While this is certainly good for the region, it could also be fraught with downsides, if not handled smartly. Our real estate prices could quickly become unaffordable to many residents. Our water and energy usage and costs could explode. Transportation systems could be negatively impacted. I'm hopeful the city and regional planners balance real world implications, infrastructure considerations, and benefits to "regular people" with the increased investment and prospects of job growth.
