Kamalalochan Patra writes about his learnings from a recent Business World interview featuring Parmesh Shahani: ▶ Tangible actions should be taken by organizations to achieve that authority of marking themselves as "inclusive or diverse" rather changing their logos to rainbow colors. ▶ Revising policies to eliminate discrimination, supporting LGBTQIA individuals & ERGs' (employee resource groups) & investing in community initiatives. ▶ Major part of understanding and work should have to align in removing "biases" by conducting interesting training and structural interventions overall with the employees. ▶ The organizations have to make their understanding aligned with this thought that "inclusivity goes beyond running a campaign in the month of June", its definitely more than that! ▶ This point made me also smirk a little bit considering the workforce that we live in today and the workplace where we are trying to fit in, the point was "stop talking and start doing" To read the full article, head here: https://lnkd.in/gv9KxQeq #PrideAtGodrej #LGBTQIA #InclusiveWorkplace #StrongerTogether #EqualOpportunitiesEmployer

Embracing Gender Diversity in Corporate World! At #Hikal we celebrate gender diversity every day by believing in a fact that all jobs are equal for women and men, and all women and men are equal for all jobs. At our Research & Technology Centre located at Pune that proudly employs scientists, the responsibility of a scientist is considered accomplished only when she/he travels to manufacturing facilities, and transfers technology that is developed in a laboratory to a commercial manufacturing plant. Two of our wonder women Pranoti Wadkar and Rutuja Gundal have recently demonstrated exemplary commitment by travelling to our manufacturing plants located in Karnataka and Gujarat and continued their stay until successful completion of projects beating all conventional odds that restrict them to work for extended hours and in various shifts. It is these examples and role modelling that builds faith in others and helps us take higher leaps. Kudos to their commitment and we continue to be more inclusive in our journey. Also, being inclusive is nothing less than receiving consistent support from your colleagues who are equally passionate to contribute to the cause and develop infrastructure and an ecosystem that successfully creates and sustains such examples. 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 Prachi Nigam from Sitapur tops UP Board 10th exams with 98.50%. She scores 591/600, aims to crack IIT-JEE. Congratulations Prachi! Yet this achiever came under the fire of internet trolls due to her facial features. It's unfortunate that society often prioritizes physical appearance over intelligence and accomplishments, especially when it comes to women. The expectation for women to adhere to certain beauty standards can overshadow their achievements and capabilities. It's important to challenge these stereotypes and recognize people for their talents and contributions regardless of their appearance. Engaging in such behavior is not just disrespectful, it's #harmful and #regressive. It undermines the progress towards equality and perpetuates damaging stereotypes. We should celebrate people for their talents and contributions, not diminish them based on superficial judgments. #RegressiveBehaviour #BeautyStandards #Stereotyping #ValueBrilliance #ChangeNarrative #ChangeMindset AGUA Sunitha Vikram I Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Expert

In a world that increasingly champions diversity and inclusivity, it's disheartening to know that we still face discrimination based on our sexual orientation, something I experienced at a well-established company. For eight years, I dedicated my time and energy to my role within a company that specialized in movies and series, navigating complex copyright issues. When the pandemic struck and remote work became a viable option, the company began offering work-from-home arrangements to employees staying alone or with family. This seemed like a logical step, given the circumstances. Wanting to prioritize my health and the well-being of my partner, who had recently undergone surgery, I applied for the work-from-home option. However, my manager unexpectedly rejected the request. So I made the brave decision to share my personal truth with my manager, explaining that I am gay and that my partner, Deepak, was my family. Sadly, the manager's response was disheartening and discriminatory. I informed them that such relationships weren't recognized as a family under Indian law, unlike in some other countries. Consequently, my plea for understanding and compassion fell on deaf ears, leaving me without work and pay for two months. After six months of enduring this painful situation, I decided to resign from a company I had dedicated eight years of their life to. In a heartfelt resignation email to HR, I not only recounted my ordeal but also expressed hope for change. I emphasized the need for awareness within the management regarding the LGBTQ community. It's worth noting that this was a well-established, century-old entity with thousands of employees in Bangalore alone. Even within seemingly progressive times, discrimination can still rear its ugly head, often in unexpected places. The battle for equality and understanding is ongoing, and it's essential for organizations to continually educate themselves about different communities and experiences. Each voice that speaks out can contribute to a more inclusive world, not just in policy but in practice as well. At the end of the day, an employee's role with the company should solely define them as such. To elaborate, while employees juggle various roles like parenthood, filial duty, friendships, family ties, cultural and religious affiliations, and gender identities, within the workplace, their primary identity revolves around their professional contributions. At home, the same employee might excel as a parent or partner, thanks to a healthy work-life balance. Similarly, gender plays no role in the tasks performed at the office. Therefore, neither employees nor employers should bring gender activism into the workplace, ensuring smoother operations. Management should avoid token gestures aimed at garnering publicity or diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) points, as this path can be precarious. Raising awareness about these points is essential, but it requires consistent reinforcement rather than a one-time effort.
After her gender affirmative surgery, Kalki Subramaniam 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 started using the women’s restroom. One of her colleagues giggled at her and said, “So, now you sit and pee?” Subramaniam’s reaction was one of anger. This was 20 years ago. But in the last few years, companies across India Inc have introduced a host of initiatives to make LGBTQIA employees feel included in the workforce, says an earlier report by The Economic Times. A few such measures are employee resource groups, allyship programmes, gender-neutral restrooms, and enhanced insurance cover. And LGBTQIA professionals feel the difference, says another report by The Hindu. Sandeepta Das 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈, Graphic and Visual Design Analyst at Accenture Operations, says that the company covered all aspects of her transition-related health care through its inclusive medical insurance policies. That said, biases still exist. Maira Q., Lead - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Godrej Capital, shares, “I’ve been told that I have a ‘non-woman’ approach, a comment I don’t understand. Misgendering has been a constant issue.” At an individual level, how can LGBTQIA professionals navigate instances of bias? Maira says, “I actively build a small community of allies around me and strive to expand this group every day. This network of support is crucial for fostering an inclusive culture and ensuring that there are always people who understand and stand up for LGBTQIA rights.” On the other hand, Sindhu Gangadharan, MD at SAP Labs India, shares in The Hindu report that companies must guard against unconscious biases in hiring and promotion processes. Subramaniam says that she wouldn’t react in the same way now. But adds, “I would choose to work in an organisation that has a strong 2SLGBTQIA workplace policy.” How can firms help prevent both direct and unconscious biases against LGBTQIA employees? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
