🍎 🍌 🍇 🍉 Find out how Rotterdam Fruit Wharf is transforming the fruit and vegetable sector with more efficient operations, increased productivity, reduced emissions and more benefits by making use of the Intercity Barge connection within Port of Rotterdam. In the latest article published by Joint Corridors Off-Road Peter van de Laar (Commercial Director) of Rotterdam Fruit Wharf explains how they realised the modal shift and how they could benefit from this in their daily operations. Since July last year, Rotterdam Fruit Wharf have already handled over 1.000 TEU by barge from the deepsea terminals to their barge connected location in Rotterdam. “This modal shift immediately brings major benefits, such as: avoiding landside bottlenecks at the deep sea terminals, improved sustainability, avoiding congestion on highways around Rotterdam, no more peak surcharges and other indirect cost savings” according to Peter van de Laar. A good showcase how barge also can be a suitable modality in case of more sensitive cargo flows and even on the short-distance! Here you can read the full success story: https://lnkd.in/esRjqfqK

Balancing resilience, agility and sustainability in the supply chain ⛓️ 🥑 For our #AvocadoCongress roundtable on sustainable sea logistics, we were delighted to be joined by Graham Schrieder of A.P. Moller - Maersk and Javier Lopez of Autoridad Portuaria Bahía de Algeciras - Port of Algeciras. The majority of avocados consumed in Europe are transported by ship - and while sea freight produces 25 times lower greenhouse gas emissions than vehicle transportation, many of the industry’s key players are embarking on sustainability initiatives balanced with resilient and agile supply chains. Aiming for net zero operations by the year 2040, Maersk is evolving the way that it transports fruit across trade routes. This includes deploying large-scale engines for container ships run on more sustainable methanol, to optimising fruit quality with StarRipe - a methodology already trialled with bananas, allowing the fruit to ripen onboard so that by the time of arrival it is ripe and ready. After arrival, ports such as Algeciras - which alone channels 180,000 tons of avocados to the EU annually - is seeking to optimise transit through greater digitalisation, advance communications with container ships and transport infrastructure. All of this to ensure your fruit arrives from tree to plate, thanks to a ready and more sustainable supply chain! #avocado #supplychain #sustainability

🐟Sardine Canning Plant (Vigo - Galicia🇪🇸, 1951). Located on Spain's northwest coast, Vigo's access to the Atlantic Ocean's rich fishing grounds made it a prime location for maritime industries🛥️. The canning industry began in the 1800s with new preservation techniques that allowed fish to be stored and transported long distances without spoiling. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Vigo had become a major player in the global fish canning🥫 industry, specializing in tuna, sardines, and other seafood. The establishment of canneries transformed the local economy, providing jobs for thousands and fueling industrial growth. Key advancements included steam-powered machinery and improved packaging methods, increasing efficiency and product longevity. In the 20th century, Galicia became one of Europe’s leading fish processing regions. Vigo's canneries supplied both domestic and international markets, exporting canned fish to Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Despite modern challenges like competition and changes in fish stocks, Vigo🇪🇸 remains a central hub for the fish canning industry, balancing tradition with innovation. #Ilovemetalcans #doubleseam #canseaming #canning #cannedfood

Wine and chocolate firm ordering third cargo sailing ship for Atlantic trade Grain de Sail plans to launch 200-teu vessel in 2027 TradeWinds Gary Dixon France’s Grain de Sail is readying an order for a third in its series of cargo sailing vessels. The wine and chocolate company said the 200-teu ship will be launched in 2027. The Grain de Sail III will carry 3,000 tonnes of cargo across the Atlantic in 13 days, using only wind power. “With Grain de Sail III, we are displaying our ambitions and strengthening our leadership in the decarbonised maritime transport segment,” said Oliver Barreau, the company’s co-founder and president. “To make wind-powered transport accessible, we need to change scale, and that’s what we’re about to do with a pure sailing container ship,” he added. The 110-metre vessel will have 4,000 square metres of sails and operate with a crew of 10. Grain de Sail said it would achieve a decarbonisation rate of more than 90%. #shipping #ships #commodities #cocoa #chocolate #wine #maritime #transportation #oceanfreight #sailing #france #agriculture

I am posting this article as I spent many decades in the Supply Chain Industry and 5 years in the Fruit Export Industry. I was then based in Cape Town Port and my office was on the quay side. With the greatest view ever watching all vessels come & go! This will still have a severe impact on the deciduous fruit industry and the growers of fruit in the Western Cape & Boland areas. #transnet #portcongestion #exports #deciduousfruit #fruitindustry
