This is good progress, I think …? That the Amazon staff can strike on the most painful possible day for their employer… In my view, employers need to be held humbly to account when they try and stupidly give their employees pairs of false teeth. Instead employers must listen closely to the employees and allow them to pull their own transformation of the future… Pleased that the GMB have got involved, not least because I want this publicity gif Amazon, mainly because as a scrutinised leader I like to be able to be and use good examples … And there are several great examples from Amazon, e.g. their policy I’ve been told about of “immediate yes or two-page No justification, whenever a leader wants to try to say “No” to a workers great idea“.. But their apparent tax policy and apparent zero hours contract policy has always hampered me in the past from using them as a good example, which has frustrated me when I’m on my feet in front of a room of 15 “Accelerators”.. ""Organizing workers is a different skill than administering a union"" A great quote from the former National Labor Relations Board Chair, and good advice for anyone trying to stand up any sort of group. And I speak from experience. In this case we're talking about the Amazon Labor Union. "The union's troubles since its victory in early 2022 illustrate the difficult path that grassroots organizers face. They also represent a different outcome than what activists hoped for—a wave of other warehouses following the lead set by New York workers." Initial fervor in any situation usually dwindles, and in this case, the post-victory reality has set in. Dissent in the union's leadership, lack of donations and financial support, high turnover of Amazon workers, and a host of other normal business-y issues are taking their toll. "Companies have advantages in unionization contests, including the ability to hold mandatory meetings and have more accurate information about their workforce than any union has, according to labor researchers. Last month Amazon revealed its profits had tripled to $9.9bn (about £8.2bn). At the same time, Amazon workers have revealed plans to hold strikes and protests on Black Friday in more than 30 countries including the UK. The day of action, to be held on 24 November, was announced in Manchester at the first Make Amazon Pay summit of trade unionists one month ago. The US senator Bernie Sanders was in attendance in Manchester alongside Spain’s second deputy prime minister, Yolanda Diaz, and the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, Paul Nowak, encouraging Amazon workers to “join the global fight for their rights”. The reason? - Amazon squeezes workers: While tripling profits in Q3 2023, Amazon subjects warehouse workers and drivers to a high-pressure environment that breaks their bodies and ultimately forces them to quit. - Amazon squeezes communities: While making €50 billion in revenue in 2022, Amazon did not pay any taxes for the fifth consecutive year in its European headquarters of Luxembourg. - Amazon squeezes the planet: While Amazon celebrated a 0.4% drop in total emissions in 2022, it would still take the company until the year 2378 to reach its stated 2040 target of net zero emissions. BREAKING: Amazon Faces Legal Action Over Alleged Union Interference Today, GMB has initiated legal proceedings against Amazon, accusing the company of persuading UK employees to resign from the union. Key points: -Amazon workers were forced to attend "long anti-union seminars" during their working hours and that managers bullied and intimidated union representatives. -QR codes were generated to an email to request that an employee's union membership be canceled, were displayed in Amazon workplaces. -Trade unions must initially seek voluntary recognition from employers to bargain on behalf of their staff. If refused, they can apply to the Central Arbitration Committee CAC for statutory recognition, a step that underscores the structured approach to labor rights in Britain.
