These words would come back to haunt the 16th US President. They were uttered by him in 1848:
“Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and for a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, – a most sacred right – a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government, may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people that can, may revolutionize, and make their own, of so much of the territory as they inhabit. More than this, a majority of any portion of such people may revolutionize, putting down a minority, intermingled with, or near about them, who may oppose their movement.”
His equivocation lends itself to the erroneous notion that has regrettably been accepted as a proper reflection of the vision of our Founding Fathers. Consequently, the belief in the primacy of the central government and its natural authority to nullify the provision of the state -or group of states- is mistaken as a natural portion of the federal government.
Nothing could be further from the truth!!!!!!!
Equivocations, such as these, are those against which the true patriot is relegated to rail. It is not merely the right- but the duty- to guard the state against not only governmental overreach, but the influences of factions from far away; whose aims have eroded our identity and the sovereignty expressly guaranteed under the law.
As for the so-called "Great Emancipator" , one question will perhaps forever remain unanswered. Was his equivocation in this matter an exercise in pandering? Perhaps it was the result of emotional changes that were a by- product of the rare genetic cancer whose deadly effects were stayed but by the hand of John Wilkes Booth!!!
