Every now and then I will stumble upon an article that is super relevant to my recent experiences and it feels like the author has been there. This article articulates so well the nuances of designing within the growth space. As designers we are always analyzing trade-offs and how we do that is by asking the right questions. One of the questions this article identifies as important to what a design should address is: "What does the user care about? How does the solution you're offering reinforce — not interrupt — what they're up to? Why would a user care about this feature you’re introducing?" So good! Time and time again I see Design Systems fall short 😮💨 These massive, complex systems that when all put together just look... ok. But design systems can be amazing! And they should not dissolve creativity. It should become a foundation to innovate upon. Here's what you do: Have an innovation area in your design file that is separate to everything, Now - Detach components - Take away all your autolayouts - Find inspiration - Break patterns - Add interactions - Bits of sizzle - Timeboxed concept sessions - Design high fidelity mockups - Test and Validate (or Invalidate) - Build that case to add new and creative things into the roadmap 🚀 These innovation tactics and sessions should be consistent and built into your ways of working.
