Tomorrow we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of history and choose a legacy and story for generations to come. When we each go to the ballot box on Saturday, there will be a moment of quiet for us to mark our decision on a simple piece of paper. There will be no media headlines around us, no social media noise - it will be each of us alone to cast our vote. In that moment, we will choose a legacy. On behalf of Life Without Barriers, a charity who partners with First Nations people and communities across this country, we encourage you to choose a legacy that unites us and which offers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a way out of disadvantage and the possibility of returning to a thriving people among us. The way to achieve that is writing Yes. In those moments before you vote, without any external pressure or influence, we ask you to think about what the decision you make will mean for the generations following us. Particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are relying on the 97% of us with the power to decide whether their families and communities are able to have a say and contribute to the solutions their communities need. If you have been unsure how to vote because of all of the noise, that is ok. Your time is now. There is so much potential and opportunity in voting Yes – it offers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people dignity and opportunity – something we all strive for ourselves and our loved ones. You will have heard people say this is a historical time in our nation and that is true. Your single vote really matters with the answer residing in the legacy you choose.

Whether you like it or not, 2024 is a presidential election year! Faith-based nonprofits and their employees, directors, officers, and volunteers often care deeply about political affairs. And for good reason. The political candidates we elect and the laws our governments enact seriously impact religious liberty, the work of faith-based nonprofits, and many issues central to preserving our civic life. But there is a well-known tension: faith-based nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status are limited in their ability to advocate for political issues and candidates. Napa Legal's latest resource explains the basics on lobbying, issue advocacy, and campaign activity for 501(c)(3) organizations and includes a sample policy to protect your organization. I am a “daughter of Mississippi” who, despite having grown up under Jim and Jane Crow laws and practices that were strictly enforced, was able to achieve a level of professional success I did not even know to dream about when I was growing up in Mississippi without even having access to a library. I was able to achieve that level of success because of the sacrifices, the courage, the tenacity, and the unwavering commitment of my family and a broad cross section of people of goodwill, all of whom worked to make America throw off the shackles of oppression and open its doors of freedom to all. Because of that legacy; because the Supreme Court and some other federal courts seem posed to continue the damage they began during the last few years of overruling laws and rules designed to make the promises of the Constitution a reality for the dispossessed; and because the Supreme Court’s immunity decision erodes the principles underlying our democratic system of government, I thought the best way to celebrate the 4th was to redouble my efforts to reach as many voters as possible to encourage them to vote “Blue” down the line in November. I spent the July 4th weekend doing that. This post continues that effort. Here are some things each of us can do: · Reach out to as many people as we can (as often as possible) to encourage them to vote. Commit to reaching at least 10 people and asking them to connect with at least 10 others. · Go to vote.org and become familiar with the resources it offers (e.g., what's on the ballot; registration status; information on registering to vote; information on voting by mail; and state-by-state information on voting restrictions and other rules); and encourage our network to do the same. · Help people understand the importance of voting not just for the president (e.g., the Speaker of the US House of Representatives is third in line to assume the presidency; thus, it is critical to flip the House; the US Senate confirms federal judges; thus, it is critical to work to maintain the majority in the Senate) · Understand that because people are educated, or professionals, is no guarantee they will vote. That simply is not the case. Sometimes, even well-meaning people let work take priority over performing civic duties, including voting. It is imperative that we who believe in the promises of the Constitution become and stay involved! Our freedom (especially for the younger generation) hangs in the balance. Here are two columns that make that point eloquently, by noting how the country will change if Trump is elected: https://lnkd.in/eg8HTGAg https://lnkd.in/eaaptr2N
