Today I want to talk about the #dreamgap. Did you know that girls as young as FIVE, develop self-limiting beliefs and think they're not as clever or as capable as boys? They start thinking that certain things are beyond them. And they stop *dreaming* that they could be those things. Isn't that sad? Read that again: They place limits on their #dreams. And it all has to do with what they see and hear around them. If all the doctors they see are men, they start thinking that women can't be doctors. If politicians on TV, astronauts, business MEN, fireMEN is all they see and hear about, they internalise that those roles are not for them! And yes, nowadays, there's #education and media that says otherwise, but that comes later. And by then it's simply too late. That is why women of all ages and in all fields tend to doubt themselves more than men. Tend to be more timid in asking for a raise than men or in putting themselves forward for a promotion. The #STEM gap in higher education is yet another consequence. So yes, the dream gap has a lot to answer for. And it's why #representation is so very important. Elizabeth Marvel said it best. "You can't be what you can't see." The OECD Forum Network estimates that it will take another 132 years to close the gender gap. So yeah. We still have a way to go.
