Congratulations, Jing Xu, on your well-deserved recognition by DART and the community you serve! It was my pleasure to introduce you at APTA’s Mobility Conference.
We thank Valeria Aloe, published Latina author of Uncolonized Latinas, for participating and sharing her rich insights and journey in writing her book.
A few highlights:
💡Latinos can self-empower by using their voices to overcome internalized oppression, and to unify the community.
💡There is significant 'interference' that Latinos field which can be a major distraction to one's personal and professional goals.
💡Latinos take an active role in pushing for change from the bottom-up, and educating leaders from the top-down.
💡We as professionals and as a community must actively overcome the setbacks of a scarcity mindset. Key is to build relationships and connectivity by taking the simple steps of inviting another for cafecito.

My featured interview with Asian Founders Network! Whether it be tech, pageants, content creation, or beyond, I've learned this valuable lesson — bringing your authentic self and a positive perspective to every situation will get you incredibly far.

In celebration of AAPI heritage month, we're launching our AFN founder series and showcasing some of our members.
Our first featured AFN member is Melanie Wardhana, who is a tech recruiter, content creator, and model.
Above all, she has an inspiring journey to share.
Melanie is a former Miss Asian America and Miss World California.
She discusses her experience as an Asian American, growing up without many people of the same background around her, and how entering the pageant world transformed her life.
She shares insights about striving for perfection and how it didn't lead to success.
Through shifting her perspective, she became the best version of herself, which ultimately led her to win the title.
Identity is a complex construction of what makes an individual, and this complexity reaches a whole new level for us, humans from colonized territories.
We carry in our beings so many different races, ethnicities, and cultures that trying to label it is not only insulting but also will inevitably leave a part of us out - especially because they never come from us, right? Not to mention that these labels are often weaponized to foment discrimination and weaken the groups by taking them apart.
A perfect example of that? "Hispanic". Hispanic is a label created by the U.S. Census in the '60s - '70s to identify and quantify different groups of people - before, everyone was just "Mexicans."
Yet, Hispanic" is "a person whose cultural traditions originate from Spain," and well... we have centuries of pre-Columbian history; we have folks who speak Portuguese, French, Creole, and other languages instead of Spanish; We have Afro-Latinx; we have Asians; We have Brown, Black, White;
Perhaps Latinx still isn't THE perfect term, but it definitely is an improvement.
So, please, do as Mariana says: If you want to celebrate us, celebrate ALL OF US.

Basic tip if you want to do Latin and Hispanic heritage month:
If you call the celebratory month “Hispanic heritage month”, you are erasing all Latin Americans and caribbeans who are not Spanish speakers!
The ONLY way to make this heritage month really inclusive is to use “Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month” in the name, NOT do all the programming only in Spanish and be very intentional in inviting ALL Latin American and Caribbean communities, including Brazilians, Afro Caribbeans, Afro Latines and Latines who might not be fluent in Spanish. If you are organizing events, make sure to have all or most of these different Latinx identities reflected.
If you chose to only talk about Hispanic part and focus only on Spain stuff, you are doing a disservice, propagating prejudice and misinformation, and actively harming people.
Summary: don’t be a part of the problem. Don’t perpetuate colonizing concepts. Celebrate ALL of us or simply stay quiet and let US celebrate our identities. And if you are a Latinx and wants to only do things for part of the community, shame on you.

I've watched this video at least 5 times. And with each viewing, I become more disturbed.
Every time I watched the video, I wondered:
- What was wrong with the cabinet as it was? I assume it functioned as intended/expected since all the modifications were simply aesthetic.
- If you didn't like the appearance that much, why not just choose something else?
- How much time was spent transforming the cabinet? Were those changes really worth the time and effort? Did it make the cabinet hold things better?
- After all those modifications, what if the cabinet doesn't work the same? Are we sure the changes were simply superficial or did we unintentionally impact functionality?
- How do you know the cabinet is there if it can't be seen? Does anyone forget it's there and get another one?
This video is allegorical to certain times in my career. Instead of remembering the reasons why I was hired and focusing on getting the best work out of me, more time was spent trying to mold me until I became indistinct. Talk about a painful lesson.
Instead of becoming unrecognizable, I'd much rather be appreciated as a statement piece. Wouldn't you?

We all want to blend in…
…to at least some degree.
Being accepted, Being valued, Being part of a community makes us whole.
…yet…
We also strive to be unique, individualistic, and special.
So where does this leave us?
Perhaps when we accept our (and other’s) authenticity…
…and fully embrace our shared humanity…
…do we then both blend in and stand out at the same time?

Rebuilding local ecosystems with native plants.
Supporting Indigenous businesses, authors, and craftspeople.
Visiting a museum that shares about Indigenous history and culture.
Sharing in the art of storytelling.
