I attended the End of Design conference at VIENNA DESIGN WEEK yesterday. The talks focused on the limits of design in various topics like climate, beauty, data. It was so refreshing (cathartic?) listening to a group of passionate practitioners so coldbloodedly discuss and dissect "the undesignable" in nuanced ways. Yes, we've made progress, both in our positioning and how we measure the impact of our work. Yes, there are limits to what we can affect and how. No, the latest design/tech breakthrough promising to disrupt this and that doesn't make sense outside of our micro-communities. ✨ Cool things from END OF DESIGN ✨ - "people hate bad design and secretly love it - Sébastien Mathys (please check out @uglydesign on Instagram) - most recurring word among one star Google reviews: time (via Cosima Terrasse) - finally, a designer saying they're *not" human-centered (aka The Manifesto of Phyto-centred Design... which I don't personally align with, but fun to ponder on) - interventions (aka memes below) from Herman Wakefield - the moderator immediately rebutting one of the speakers' assumptions that someone would need a formal design education to have a well-founded opinion on the value of design 🫡  #Vienna #ViennaDesignWeek #ContentDesign #TheUndesignable #EndOfDesign #DesignMemes

Congratulations!🎉 Always proud to accompany the next generation of designers on their way into the big wide world 🌍 . Alina Bachofer, Koray Hergül and Katharina Dana Bolius have successfully completed their Master's thesis together as an interdisciplinary design team with an amazing result⭐ . They have spent the last few months working on the topics of “mobility of the future”, “mental health” and “vehicle interior experience” and have designed an immersive, multi-sensory vehicle interior experience for ride-hailing services 🚗. The aim of the experience is to increase the passenger's energy level 🔋, the ability to concentrate and reduce stress. As part of their work, they conducted interviews with experts from the fields of psychology, the automotive industry, light- and sound designers. With the help of user interviews and several iteration loops, they finalized, prototyped and tested a concept. Positive effects could be proven in a subsequent user study 🚀. Last week was Dutch Design Week! For non-dutchies: this is a yearly design event focused on experimental design, product design of the future, service and social design for the people of today and tomorrow, from designers and organisations from the Netherlands. The event is always located all over the city Gemeente Eindhoven. ‘Service Design Days’ workshop - As we showed last week, this was an afternoon full of inspiration, energy and new connections in the service design sector. Together we have a lot of knowledge, power and influence to design futures for the good, so let’s collaborate and innovate, together! - team ktc ‘Lees Simpel’: Really cool (working!) app that shows the positive impact of AI on humans and society. Lees Simpel is an app that helps people read complicated letters, with the help of AI. You take a photo of the letter and the app provides a summary in plain and simple language. – Koen van der Loop ‘Messmerizing’: The empty offices of NS at the station of Eindhoven, which are not used anymore, have been transformed in a temporary art gallery Very cool to see this creative way of repurposing our empty offices. We should be doing a lot more of that! – Koen Tijhuis ‘Spacefarming’: Designing your own 'kweekvlees' at the Embassy of Food at the Evoluon. (Also known as cultured meat, a type of innovative agriculture that is ‘tissue engineering’.) Interesting take on the future of meat and food! - Marit Proper ‘Will Water Want’ by Marte Mei van Haaster. She took the question: what if nature, in this case the river Dommel in Eindhoven, had a voice? And took it literally. Together with a whole team including an organ builder they created these 3 natural organ instruments or Sound Pillars, that make a sound depending on the height of the river's water. Inspiring to see how co-creating with city planners, instrument makers, water consultants, the municipality and other disciplinaries result in such impactful but ‘simple’ objects of natural interaction for the city!
