Excellent and very informative article. I would also add in the importance of building climate resilience when replacing the old tea bushes by using drought tolerant, high quality clones.

Amul: 50 Years of Dairy Revolution Empowering Farmers Amul, the epitome of cooperative success, marks its golden jubilee, continuing to empower 3.6 million farmers in Gujarat’s transformative dairy legacy. In the quaint village of Bedwa, Nilesh Patel, a 35-year-old farmer, pauses amidst his daily routine to check his phone. Having just sold milk to the local cooperative, Patel receives instant payment, a testament to the efficiency of the cooperative system. He is among the thousands of member-producers benefitting from the cooperative model, a tradition passed down through generations. Patel’s story resonates across 18,600 village dairy cooperative societies in Gujarat, united under the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF). This vast network, celebrating its 50th anniversary, is instrumental in uplifting rural livelihoods, managing 30 million liters of milk daily and generating an annual turnover of ₹80,000 crore. Rooted in a history of struggle and resilience, the Amul model emerged in response to the exploitation faced by farmers in the milk marketing system. Spearheaded by leaders like Morarji Desai and Tribhuvandas Patel, the cooperative movement gained momentum, culminating in the establishment of the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd in 1946. Impressed by Amul’s success, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri initiated Operation Flood, catalyzing a nationwide dairy revolution. Under the visionary leadership of Verghese Kurien, Amul’s impact extended beyond Gujarat, shaping India’s dairy sector and inspiring similar cooperatives worldwide. Today, GCMMF stands as a testament to Kurien’s vision, with 98 dairy plants across India and a diverse product portfolio. Despite evolving challenges, GCMMF remains committed to its founding principles, empowering farmers and fostering economic growth. Looking ahead, GCMMF aims to diversify its product range and enhance productivity, further cementing its position as a leader in the global dairy industry. In the spirit of cooperation and innovation, Amul continues to transform lives, embodying the timeless values of self-reliance and community empowerment. #amul #cooperatives #cooperation #goldenjubilee

The Tamil Nadu government should take inspiration from Tripura's recent initiatives and focus on promoting its GI-tagged Sattur Samba & Ramnad Mundu dry red chilli in global markets, particularly targeting the value-added chilli flake segment, which is in high demand as a pizza and burger topping. The Sattur samba and Ramnad Mundu chilli, cultivated organically by default in aspirational districts of Tamilnadu, has immense potential to cater to growing international markets, much like Tripura's recent plans for Bird's Eye Chilli exports to Germany. Tripura’s Agriculture Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, recently announced a massive expansion of organic farming across 50,000 hectares during a special event in Agartala. By supporting farmers through the distribution of transport vehicles to Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) and promoting organic farming practices, the state is empowering its agricultural sector. This initiative, aligned with Prime Minister’s focus on sustainable agriculture, highlights the need for reducing chemical fertilizers and pesticides while improving farmers’ income through organic and scientific methods. Tamil Nadu’s Sattur Samba and Ramnad Mundu chilli, known for its unique mild flavor and pungency, has strong potential in the growing international demand for organic and value-added products. If the state government prioritizes targeted efforts, similar to Tripura’s, it can enhance the global presence of Sattur Samba and Ramnad Mundu chilli, particularly in Western countries where the demand for single source mild pungent chilli is raising among growing Indian restaurants in Western countries and raising global mild pungent chilli flakes with raising pizza and burger consumption. Tamil Nadu should strategically position itself in the value-added chilli market by focusing on logistics, marketing, and sustainability, ensuring the state’s rich agricultural heritage and its farmers' incomes flourish on the global stage. Director at FoGS global R&C with the mission to help access sustainable disruptive frontier technologies in herbs and dairy to the stakeholders for a sustainable planet, community and environment.
Well articulated sir Kuldeep Sharma. The mystery around milk production to be lower by around 80 million ton, would mean milk yield lowered from 1800 litres per animal per year to 1200 litres . That could be plausible figure, as animal census shows 130 million dairy animals and authenticated. Now of the 150 million ton, if marketed surplus is 80 million ton, and about 56 million ton already entering the organised supply chain, not much milk left for increasing base for the cooperatives and pvt sector. The 24 million ton with the unorganised sector holds the catch in the future, on what type of farming system in terms of herd size, feeding system and future sustainable yield. I hope, it is the family farms with 20-100 animals, indigenous breed progeny selected, and feeding base of homegrown nutritive fodder and homemade feed that will sustain the future growth in India dairy sector and environment friendly. 🌱 #unorganized #familyfarms #sustainability
