Did you know that 70% of the food wasted in Australia every year is still perfectly edible?  What’s more concerning, is that at the same time, FoodBank Australia have reported that in the last 12 months, more than one in five Australians have run out of food at some point and been unable to purchase more.  Therefore, the issue of food insecurity is more widespread than most people think and highlights how our wasted food could be put to better use. Hunger is one of the world’s most challenging problems - that’s why Zero Hunger is United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #2. It drives me nuts to read that around 30% of all food production is wasted, especially when I think of all these animals bred to suffer, only to end up in the bin. FareShare UK is the most elegant solution tackling hunger I’ve seen lately; supporting those in the UK facing food insecurity by distributing surplus food. FareShare delivers almost 2 million meals a week in the UK using good quality surplus food from right across the food industry. Over 4 million tonnes of food wasted in the UK food industry each year is good-to-eat when it’s discarded. FareShare redistributes this surplus food to charities that turn it into meals. In 2023-24, the network redistributed over 56,000 tonnes of in-date surplus food last year to over 8,000 charities including domestic violence refuges, breakfast clubs, food banks & day centres. This food fed nearly 1,000,000 people and prevented over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions through waste. FareShare operates through smart partnerships with brands like Tesco, Sainsbury’s and others - it’s a fantastic example of a win-win for large corporates who can support the charity sector while minimising waste. Food bank usage at an all time high while big grocers and the government negotiate the grocery code of conduct. Can we depend on publicly traded corporations to optimize for anything other than shareholder value? Unlikely. Can we count on the government to put controls on a grocery oligopoly that currently enjoys a low competition environment? I won’t be waiting to see. What can we do to counteract greedflation? Vote with our dollars. If you can afford it, here’s how: ↳ Buy into a local CSA to support your local farmers. ↳ Donate money or high need food to a food bank. ↳ Shop at your small neighbourhood markets. Even if you can’t afford it, you can: ↳ Reduce food waste in your kitchen. ↳ Join in the circular economy. ↳ Shop consciously. I’ve been participating in a CSA for a couple years now, since I’m priviledged to afford it and supporting the local food system is one of the most important things we can do. Supporting local growers and buying locally is a win-win-win for sustainability, supporting small business and for community health. To mark Food Waste Action Week 2024 we will be sharing some of the ways that FareShare's Network and partners tackle food waste and hunger by unlocking surplus food in the supply chain and redistributing it to charities and community groups across the UK. Even with more and more people needing food support, there can still be stigma around getting help. Surplus food helps change the conversation around food support, empowering people and bringing communities together around a positive cause. In a recent survey FareShare did, we found over 89% of people who accessed food services from charities we support felt good about food waste. 💬 A food service user in Tayside and Fife said: "It removes a lot of the stigma attached to food bank use, so you don't have to feel embarrassed to use it. Some people can judge you when using it." Supporting local communities to come together and connect through surplus food is central to the way that the FareShare Network operates 💚

Did you know that more than one-quarter of food produced is wasted globally each year? This has major social, environmental and economic consequences. It’s common for delegate numbers to fluctuate in the lead-up to an event and estimating food quantities can be tricky. At The CCD, we ensure that regular communication between clients and the hospitality manager about likely numbers can allow for adjustments in catering requirements. This helps to avoid producing unnecessary food and, in turn, reducing food waste. Other initiatives, such as donating food to local schools or charities are creative ways to manage waste after an event. Today, on Stop Food Waste Day, we want to highlight some tips and tricks you can easily implement in to your daily life to make small but significant changes in how we care for our food.
