An productive and eventful August may seem counterintuitive to some but not in the world of DAC. Over the last week: ▶ Heimdal begins operation of #ProjectBantam, the largest DAC plant in the U.S. and 2nd largest in the world. Alongside storage partner CapturePoint LLC, the Oklahoma-based facility which uses passive carbonation of limestone will have the capacity to remove 5,000 tons of CO2/year. ▶ The United States U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management  announced $52.5M will be made available for the Commercial Direct Air Capture Pilot Prize supporting technology developers that design, build, commission, and operate innovative direct air capture pilot facilities capable of capturing at least 500 tonnes of CO2/year ▶ Spiritus completed the filing of a Class VI permit application with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality for its #OrchardOne project, keeping it on track to become the world’s largest DAC facility. Designed to remove 2 million tonnes of CO2/year at scale, the first-phase operations is slated to begin by 2026. ▶  Deep Sky announced they had selected a site in #Innisfail, Alberta to build the world’s first carbon removal innovation and commercialization center, Deep Sky Alpha Labs. The facility will be operational this winter, and will have the capacity to capture 3,000 tons of CO2/year, with room for expansion, via 10 different DAC technologies. We're pleased to release our quarterly update to our Global Direct Air Capture Deployments Map New data includes: ✅ Deep Sky secure agreements with Avnos, Inc. and Skytree both for 450tpa units ✅ Planet Savers, Inc turn on Japan's first demonstrator ✅ Holocene unveiled their 10tpa demonstrator in Knoxville, Tennessee ✅ RepAir Carbon Capture team up with Energean for a 1000tpa facility that utilises permanent geologic storage in the Mediterranean Prinos saline aquifer ✅ Heirloom place Shreveport, Louisiana on the map with the announcement of a 17,000tpa plant due to be operational in 2026, with plans to expand it at scale to accommodate a further 100,000tpa in 2027! ✅ 280 Earth turned on phase one of "The Dalles", removing 500tpa powered by waste heat from Google Dalles Data Center ✅ Soletair Power announce project with Danica Ejendomme to retrofit the HVAC system in a portfolio building in downtown Aarhus, Denmark Plus updates from Project Monarch (Capture6) and Mammoth (Climeworks)! A significant set of announcements out of Washington, DC poised to help catalyze the carbon removal sector. 1) U.S. Department of the Treasury U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and USDA released "Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles" which serves as a strong signal for the private sector to support high-integrity, high quality carbon credits. An excellent start to Carbon Unbound yesterday, highlighted by an engaging discussion on the policy needs, project finance challenges, and near-term priorities for scaling the direct air capture sector. The session was moderated by our Co-founder and Executive Director Jason Hochman with Nicholas Moore Eisenberger, Giana Amador, Josh Santos and Rob van Straten as insightful panelists. The Direct Air Capture Coalition counts members and partners on five continents, across over 20 countries so we did not pass up on the opportunity to get a group photo with innovators and entrepreneurs from 15 DAC companies immediately preceding the panel. Our firm conviction that direct air capture can, and will, play a critical role in the journey to net zero is in no part due to the brilliance, diligence, dedication, and talent of those pictures on stage, and the many, many, many others not pictured around the world working to solve the world's most pressing problem.
