This special day served as a powerful reminder of the collective efforts necessary to protect our environment and address the pressing environmental challenges we face. At EFB, we are deeply committed to sustainability across all facets of our work, and we actively embrace innovative practices and initiatives to create a positive impact. Our environmental initiatives are an integral part of this commitment, and I am excited to highlight some of them: 🌿 Supporting Sustainable Agriculture: We encourage farmers to adopt environmentally friendly methods, and our participants had the opportunity to explore EFB's rooftop agriculture project—an example of urban farming that cultivates crops on our own roof. 🌿 Raise Awareness: Utilizing our vast channels, we organize campaigns to spread awareness about the importance of protecting our environment. In the face of climate change, water-related risks have become a significant concern for businesses, affecting both operational costs and long-term viability. Ensuring water security is now a primary objective for organizations. However, water, being a shared resource, especially with agriculture as a major consumer, necessitates a collaborative approach. Corporates must work alongside water user groups within watersheds to enhance the overall productivity of water usage through collective stewardship programs.   Water replenishment initiatives, such as restoring irrigation ponds and constructing water harvesting structures, are often resource-intensive and time-consuming. These efforts frequently yield limited results due to the modest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) budgets allocated for watershed development in India. Additionally, the complexities of local village politics further complicate the implementation of large-scale watershed programs.   Despite these challenges, demand-side water management in the agriculture sector presents significant opportunities for corporates to work under CSR programs. By integrating sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices into CSR programs, companies demonstrate at least 30 to 40% reduction in specific water consumption for agricultural purposes, without compromising crop yields. This approach not only reduces the stress on the freshwater needs in the catchment but also ensures a reliable return to the local farmers through CSR programs coupled with water-positive outcomes for the corporates. Through these efforts, corporates can foster stronger community relationships and drive meaningful environmental change, aligning their operations with broader sustainability goals.   Corporate water stewardship activities should integrate economic, social, and ecological metrics in watershed development. These include cost efficiency, community health benefits, and ecosystem restoration. The carbon footprint of a product is linked to every stage of its life cycle, from the extraction of locally sourced raw materials, efficient transportation methods or using sustainable product for instance. Deforestation poses a significant challenge within the supply chain and contributes to global warming. Since 2018, we’ve reduced water consumption at our Australian factories by 11%, with a target of 15% by 2030. Our latest sustainability initiative at our Stanhope site in northern Victoria is making new strides towards this target. Stanhope is on a mission to save an additional 165 million litres of water each year - that's equivalent to 66 Olympic-sized swimming pools! 💧🌏 They’re doing it by investing in new membrane technology to recover cleaning chemicals used in our processes. This reduces the sodium in our wastewater by around 25%, which is about 3.8 million table salt bottles. By reducing salt content, we need less fresh water to dilute it, leading to a 20% reduction in freshwater usage – which is where we’ll save the 165 million litres of water each year. We are working from farm to fork to transform the global food system, leading the way in tackling food loss and waste, reducing GHG emissions and water use.
