Was a packed house at the latest nDeva CTO Gathering. The main topic was around scaling global distributed teams, some of the key takeaways below: 🌍 When hiring in a different location with a big time difference, try to hire whole independent squads. If you only hire one or two and they need support from home base it can be very very challenging. 💼 Be careful when going to the US, salaries are much more expensive and it's hard to compete for the top talent as Facebook, Google, etc., take the majority of those. So you wanna be a CTO? Here are 5 things you need to know! 💼 Stepping up to a CTO role? It's more than just tech expertise (and it might be more overwhelming than you think). Here’s what you need to consider: 1. As a CTO, your role shifts from hands-on coding to strategic planning. You'll need to think long-term and be able to consider how tech decisions impact the entire company. 2. You're not just dealing with code, but clients. Being able to communicate effectively with customers, understanding their needs and challenges, becomes an important part of your job. 3. When things go south, you're the go-to person. Handling high-pressure situations and making swift, effective decisions is a daily affair. 4. Your role as a CTO is about leading people, not just projects. Your ability to inspire, guide, and develop your team is as important as your technical skills. 5. Understanding the business side of things is essential. You'll need to align tech initiatives with business goals and contribute to overall growth strategies. Are You Ready? Assess if these are responsibilities you're excited about. In #Berlin. 17 years ago, I embarked on an incredible journey in this city, joining the dynamic global company #Jamba!, later acquired by Fox Mobile (News Corp). It was the early days of #mobile entertainment – the “Wild Wild West” of the mobile internet, the times of the “crazy fog” the Nokia’s & Motorola In those fast-moving times, I was surrounded by smart, vibrant, driven folks. We were all under 30, a mix of misfits and mavericks from around the world, supported by brilliant German engineers and leaders. The culture was intense , tough – a precursor to “rocket internet” culture. Our mantra was clear: move fast, break things, and push boundaries, scale fast and making money. There was no “how to” manual – we were young, fearless, and determined to explore the limits of what was possible, driving business over something as new as mobile in middle of 2000’s. Berlin taught me invaluable lessons, here a few: 1. How to follow the money and run profitable businesses. 2. The importance of managing and developing talent. 3. Launching digital products and services at scale: testing, killing it, pivot or scale it. 4. Manage innovation and technology to serve business as a competitive advantage. 5. Develop my personal “compass” and “playbook” Looking back, the pressure was relentless, and not everyone could endure it. But those who did, emerged with a unique business acumen. I developed my own playbook – a guide for navigating the unknown and creating the future, still updated and evolved. I owe a tremendous amount to Berlin and the extraordinary people I worked with. Thank you, Berlin. Thank you, Jamba!/Fox Mobile team, for the priceless time we spent together. The lessons we learned and the bonds we formed will stay with us forever.
