“We've come so far with HIV care, yet so many health care disparities exist among the LGBTQ community.” – Dr. Cathy (Mary) Moffitt, MD, FAAP, CHIE, SVP & Chief Medical Officer, Aetna. At CVS Health, we're addressing these challenges with a focus on enhancing member experience, benefits and network excellence. Join us this #PrideMonth in celebrating the progress we’ve made and recognizing there is more work to do to address health disparities among the LGBTQ community.

Our recent short report in Sexual Health (with my lovely co-authors Drs. Mance Buttram and Matthew S. Ellis, PhD, MPE) found that individuals living in states with lower LGBTQ equality in the US were significantly less likely to be aware of #doxyPEP – an important evidence-based biomedical strategy that is effective at preventing bacterial STIs, particularly syphilis and chlamydia, among gay and bisexual men and trans women. (Full article: https://lnkd.in/g5GZuW8Z) Inequities find a way creeping in when there are exciting new advances afoot. An understanding of how social determinants of health structure the implementation of interventions is crucial. This has been clearly seen with HIV PrEP. We need more research focused on how social determinants of health impact the uptake of novel biomedical advances, with a distinct focus on equity and communities who are disproportionately impacted. Let's work to ensure that everyone who can benefit from #doxyPEP knows that it exists, how it works and has access to it. Incidentally, I'm also saddened that my final factsheet for aidsmap is on the topic of #doxyPEP (https://lnkd.in/gfWPt58y).

February is LGBT History Month #lgbthistorymonth 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ This year’s theme is ‘Medicine #UndertheScope’ 💉💊 If you’re in the planning stages of commemorating this month, here are some themes I would consider 👇: - The AIDS Crisis – what happened, key people and where we are now. Think Terrence Higgins Trust, accessibility of care for people at risk of HIV and AIDS, and barriers to accessing healthcare (including race, disability, gender etc) - Feritility Treatment for LGBT families – think Megan Bacon-Evans and Whitney K. Bacon, who can access NHS healthcare to create a family, the cost of private treatment and how the ability to create a family is progressing. - Your employee healthcare scheme – LGBT specific healthcare included in your employee healthcare benefit or private healthcare benefit. - The history of medicalization of LGBT people. This might look like exploring the lives of key figures like Alan Turing, and moving to where we are now. There is no “right” way to celebrate LGBT History in February, it’s just important that if you can, you do! I’m looking forward to seeing all the different ways the theme will be interpreted this year! ✨

Comment below with health equity facts, figures, impacts around Queer Health that startle, impress, or worry you. Example: For no discernible reason, HIV prep meds aren’t given a separate ndc from treatment meds; causing unnecessary administrative burden on payers, providers, and patients - and can cause confusion in insurance payments and unnecessary patient out of pocket expense. #healthequity #pride #lgbtq #healthdisparities

“Research has shown that LGBTQ people experience quite striking health inequalities”. The above quote is from The King's Fund's podcast on LGBTQIA health inequalities. When I found out that my colleague and friend, George Grammer-Taylor, is running the London Marathon next year in support of Terrence Higgins Trust, which aims to end HIV transmission in the UK by 2030, I was interested to learn more about the health disparities experienced by the LGBTQIA community. George's post is here: https://lnkd.in/eT2fPykZ You can also read my thoughts on HIV / AIDS and wider health inequalities faced by the LGBTQIA community here: https://lnkd.in/eATAWrKj #health #lgbtq #AIDSawareness

On this #TransgenderDayofRemembrance, we remember those in the trans, gender fluid and nonbinary community taken from us by violence. We remember our friends and family lost merely for living as their true selves. In our mourning, we renew the call: Trans people deserve a world of safety, where they can live as themselves and pursue their dreams without prejudice. The fight to end the HIV epidemic cannot be achieved without full transgender equality. Read more in our blog, linked below. https://bit.ly/3ur4xna #TDOR

“REMEMBER AND COMMIT” is the theme for this year’s World AIDS Day which marks the 35th remembrance of this event to serve as a reminder of the global struggle to end HIV-related stigma, an opportunity to honor those we have lost, and a rallying cry to commit to working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat. “HIV disproportionately affects members of the LGBTQ communities of color, particularly cisgender Black and Latino gay and bisexual, transgender women, and Black women.” “While HIV diagnoses decreased overall and among white men who have sex with men between 2009 and 2018, new cases remained stable among Black/African-American men who have sex with men and increased among young people aged 25-34 and Latino men who have sex with men. While Blacks/African Americans make up only about 13% of the U.S. population, we accounted for 43% of HIV-related deaths in 2018.” As a result, “Researchers suggest that culturally appropriate, tailored interventions may help communities respond to the unique needs of people in—or at the intersections of—these groups.” #healthequitynow #worldaidsday #communityhealth #survivingourblackness #
