How a Labour election win could change the EU/UK trade rules once more Well, the recently announced UK elections are almost certain to provide a change in leadership within the UK. After 14 years of Conservative rule, Brexit, and a change in sovereign, there are certainly interesting times ahead for businesses in the EU that deal with the UK and vice versa. Implications for EU Businesses As the UK election approaches, Labour leader Keir Starmer is working on a plan to renegotiate the Brexit deal. His goal is to ease trade barriers and address the Northern Ireland border issue. However, the EU wants the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to have oversight, a point of contention for many in the UK. This could significantly impact how businesses in countries such as Sweden and Spain deal with their UK B2B and B2C/D2C partners. Impact on EU Companies Dealing with the UK EU businesses may face new regulatory landscapes and trade processes as the UK negotiates with the EU. Key areas of impact include: Regulatory Alignment: Businesses might need to adjust to new standards to remain compliant. Trade Processes: Changes in customs procedures and documentation requirements could impact logistics and backend processes. Market Access: Understanding potential shifts in market access and tariffs will be crucial for strategic planning and business roadmaps. How We Can Help We have helped steer businesses from the EU dealing with the UK and UK companies dealing in the EU. EU Customs to tackle human rights violations in supply chains: In a move towards the US approach, the EU is discussing a law to ban products made with forced (including child) labour. The restrictions will cover the import, sale or export of all types of goods, whether manufactured in or imported into the EU, which are wholly or partially made using forced labour. The proposed regulation is expected to extend to the use of forced labour during products’ production, manufacture, harvest and extraction (but not service activities such as transport or distribution). This ban will be largely structured through customs rules and screening, with customs authorities empowered to suspend the release for free circulation or export of products they identify as being in violation of the ban. We'll be following this closely, but in the meantime, see our blog for more details.
