Folks often ask me Nick, why are you such a fan of building on top of OSS security products (Open Source Software)? Isn’t it mega complex and requires huge headcount? Not necessarily. I’m a big fan of OSS first security products because of the flexibility (HC or $$) , community (shape with other builders) and engineering rigor (generally highly vetted code quality and ongoing community) they provide. And when you are ready to scale past OSS, the smart OSS first companies have enterprise offerings. As engineering builders, I prefer to have the option to build on top of OSS, build or selectively buy closed source. Having the ability to graduate into enterprise when ready is a huge opportunity cost savings. Too many offerings are closed source black boxes impossible to truy pressure test and make companies security poor with massive price tags. Can’t afford a high 6 figure PAM? Too bad - you can’t have nice things. Too many enterprise closed source vendors operate like this without a pay as go or lower cost point. Closed source has its place but what makes me happiest and sparks joy are OSS first companies like Teleport whom are disrupting the legacy privileged entitlement management space with Enterprise grade OSS first privileged entitlement management.
