"Be more than an ally. Be an advocate." - a recent social media post seen in reference to supporting the LGBTQ community, specifically transgender people. It's a powerful statement, however, there's a difference between the two words (and the actions that define them) and I think that it's important that we differentiate. Why? Because allies stand in solidarity, and advocates are selectively vocal. In my opinion there aren't enough LGBTQ allies out there, so more are arguably needed. That's not to say that we don't need advocates. I just think that it's important to me that we don't overlook the need for allies right now. Specifically the need for allies that display true allyship. There's a great article which explains the differences between these two words - and which also includes 'activist' - much better than I can. Thank you WE CREATE SPACE.

For gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, and queer individuals, coming out is one of the biggest steps in the journey of self-discovery. In this Antioch Voices essay, Antioch Los Angeles faculty member Kevin Niehaus, PsyD, offers encouragement for anyone in their coming out journey and provides tips on how individuals can support their LGBTQ identifying loved ones as they discover themselves. However, he recognizes that not everyone's path is the same. "Coming out can be something you do for yourself, to yourself. [It] does not require one to share one’s identity with others; it can very much be an internal, personal experience," says Kevin. "Claiming your identity just to yourself is equally authentic and therapeutic. Sharing it externally is just a gift you can offer them." As business leaders, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion conversations often hold limited purpose thoughts: race and sex. I’m thankful that Advanced Group recognizes diversity conversations must be broader. Visibility matters. We should take this day to ask ourselves: “Are our actions helping transgender and non-binary workers feel seen, supported and safe.” Asking the question impacts so many lives, including your own. Your business will be positively impacted as well. It is impossible to garner the rich benefit diversity provides if we refuse to see. #dei #diversity
Each year on March 31, the world observes Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) to raise awareness about transgender people. It is a day to celebrate the lives and contributions of trans people, while also drawing attention to the poverty, discrimination, and violence the community faces. TDOV was founded in 2009 by US-based transgender activist Rachel Crandall, a licensed psychotherapist and the Executive Director of Transgender Michigan, both in reaction to the lack of LGBTQ days of recognition for the successes achieved by trans people, as well as the frustration that the only well-known transgender-centered day of recognition was the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). As trans allies, we need always hold space for our trans loved ones, and recognize their many accomplishments.

This toolkit draws on insights from an LGBTQ organizations working in the context of peace and security, Colombia Diversa, to provide a guide as to how to queer women, peace and security frameworks. Based on their work in the Colombian peace process and supporting LGBTQ individuals through transformative justice practices, the insights offer a way to Improving Engagement with Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LBTQ) women in WPS Programming.
