When’s the last time you broke a rule? I once heard Kenneth Downing tell a fashion show audience, “We must wear white with abandon.” This piece of fashion advice is about so much more than fashion. If you grew up hearing, “No white before Memorial Day,” then you know: there are unwritten rules about fashion, about fitting in, about knowing how to project your part of the club (and accidentally projecting you’re not.) Rick Rubin talks about rules in his book on Creativity. “Rules direct us to average behaviors.” I don’t know anybody who sets out to be average. These days I write humorous mysteries with characters that break rules for the sake of solving mysteries in their respective hometowns. (Rule followers generally don’t become amateur sleuths and try to solve crimes.) I don’t think Ken Downing was just talking about wearing white. Wearing white with abandon is about challenging rules that no longer serve us, about doing things people don’t expect us to do. It’s about doing what we want when we want, enjoying the choices available to us, and participating in our own narratives. We should do a lot of things with abandon. The simple penguin suit is a thing of the past. Men walked the red carpet last night expressing their own fashion taste and personal flair. A big similarity amongst Hollywood's leading men was a little added sparkle on the lapel and a flared trouser. Also several men rocked a boot and some with a slight heel. Whether you're a fan or not, I think much of what we saw can trickle down into our own closets. My favorite is the elevated lapel pin. You can easily add something sparkly to your jacket at your next occasion formal or casual. Most of us probably don't even need to really look too far. Before heading out to purchase your bling I would inquire with your wife, girlfriend, or even mother-in-law. They may very well have what you are looking for. If you are unable to find inspiration there I would then check out a local resale or vintage shop. Elevating your dress is about the details. But I talk about names here on LinkedIn, so let's talk about the name of the new hair care line she just launched. It's called 𝐂é𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝, which is pronounced "sacred," and I have a lot of thoughts about it! First of all, it's fascinating to see how she's chosen to leverage her name recognition here. Instead of making an outright play on her fame, like Kylie Jenner's "Kylie Cosmetics," or something completely subtle like Lady Gaga's "Haus Labs." Instead, she's gone for a playful middle ground with Cécred, thought it takes a second to realize that the "Cé" is pronounced as in Beyoncé's name, as "say." It's an IYKYK moment. An in joke. A wink. This is dangerous for almost any brand, creating complexity and friction in the name. But when you're Queen Bey, every last person who matters to your brand will get the joke, and getting it enhances the experience. Secondly, we come to calling the brand sacred. This is another choice that could have been a pretentious, overblown idea in other hands and in a different context. But in the world of Black hair, washing, conditioning, and styling truly are rituals, and to honor them at the level that this product line does, with products that lean into the idea of ritual, is to render them sacred. That's the core of the Cécred brand, and it establishes a halo of reverence and credibility that extends to people of all hair textures.
