Developing a shared language for thoughtful discussion about equity is critical for all of our work. This Black History Month, we are sharing some key terms that we find most important to understand. COLORISM IS: Using White skin color as the standard, colorism is the allocation of privilege and favor to lighter skin colors and disadvantage to darker skin colors. Colorism operates both within and across racial and ethnic groups. https://lnkd.in/gmz6CDs #blackexcellence #blacklivesmatter #melanin #blackculture #blackcommunity #blacklove #blackhistory365 #blackpowermovement #blackpeopleunite #blackhistoryeveryday #blackhistroyfacts #blackknowledgeispower #blackhistoryyear #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #blackhistorymatters #blackisbeautiful #blackknowledge #blackpower #colorism #diversity #discrimination #enddiscrimination #equity #antiracist #antiracisteducation

During Black History Month, we honor the enduring struggles and remarkable achievements of African Americans throughout history. This period also prompts us to contemplate the ongoing quest for equality and justice for all. This month, we celebrate the profound influence of African Americans on the arts, recognizing their creativity, resilience, and innovation that have enriched our culture and inspired successive generations. Let's pay homage to their legacy by amplifying diverse voices and fostering inclusive spaces for artistic expression. In observance of Black History Month, our colleagues at Element Materials Technology will engage in local discussions, collaborative learning, and introspection regarding the collective responsibility we bear in forging a world that is fair and equitable for everyone. As Carter Godwin Woodson astutely noted in "The Mis-Education of the Negro," history demonstrates that regardless of shifts in power or revolutionary movements, those who rely solely on others without learning to be self-sufficient ultimately fail to secure additional rights or privileges. I look forward to an exciting month ahead 💙 #BlackHistoryMonth #Equality #Justice #AfricanAmericanArt #DiverseVoices #BHM #BlackExcellence #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackCulture #BlackPride #BlackLeadership #BlackAchievement #CivilRights #Equality #Justice #DiverseVoices #Inclusion #CelebratingBlackHistory #BlackLegacy #HistoricalHeroes #InspiringBlackLeaders #RememberingOurRoots #Empowerment #UnityThroughDiversity

A definition: I N T E R S E C T I O N A L I T Y: The simultaneous and interacting effects of multiple group categorization on individuals with minoritized status, often leading to being perceived in a manner inconsistent with the additive contributions of those categories. It’s no wonder it’s sometimes misunderstood. Let’s simplify - Intersectionality means that the challenges associated with belonging to more than one minoritized group can add up to more than the sum of their parts. ♀ If female challenge = 1 AND ◼ If Black challenge = 1 🙋🏾♀️ Black female challenge > 2. Writer, professor, philosopher, poet and civil rights activist Audre Lorde wrote: “I recognize that my power as well as my primary oppressions come as a result of my blackness as well as my womanness and therefore my struggles on both of these fronts are inseparable.” We’ll talk more later this month about microaggressions and their role in intersectionality. Here’s more on intersectionality: https://lnkd.in/guPS2GT6 #intersectionality #blackhistorymonth #pavingitforward #foodservicewomensalliance #foodserviceindustry #wegothere

Let's Talk About Target Audiences & Racism As professionals, it's essential to understand that identifying a target audience does not equate to racism. Miss Chantal J, an Afrocentric jewelry curator, is facing backlash for catering to her community. Let's clarify: celebrating one's culture and having a target audience is not discriminatory. Racism is about denying opportunities and perpetuating harm based on race. Let's educate ourselves and others on the difference. Supporting Black excellence, Afrocentric expression, and inclusivity is crucial. Let's promote respect and understanding in our industries and beyond! #TargetAudience #Racism #Education #Inclusion #BlackExcellence #AfrocentricPride"

What do you have planned for Black Histories and Futures Month? While this work is ongoing - not just for specific months - it’s also important for organizations to honour and participate in learning, conversations and other actions during specific months. If you’re still looking for support during Black Histories and Futures Month, please reach out to me or the team Bakau Consulting Inc. We can talk and start from where you are!
I want to be so real with you. This year, the action leading up to Black Histories and Futures Month is barely a fraction of what it’s been in previous years. It’s honestly a bit alarming how quickly many organizations that talked a good talk have quietly stepped back from putting those words into action. luckily, it’s not too late. News about #diversity, #equity, and #inclusion budgets getting slashed and positions being terminated is on the rise. There’s still time to honour this coming month with more than just a passing nod. We can be a part of bringing the spirit of this month to life authentically. Reach out to learn how. #blackhistorymonth #antiracism #antioppression #education

Today we celebrate Juneteenth – a day of liberation, reflection, and hope. 🌟 June 19th, 1865, marked the end of a dark chapter and the beginning of freedom for countless African Americans. This day reminds us of the strength, resilience, and joy that come from overcoming adversity. As we honor Juneteenth, let's celebrate the richness of Black culture, the beauty of unity, and the power of freedom. Here's how we can make a difference: Embrace the History: Reflect on the significance of this day and share its story. Lift Up Voices: Support Black-owned businesses and creatives. Your support fuels dreams and builds communities. Stand Together: Participate in local celebrations, advocate for equality, and be a voice for justice. Freedom is a continuous journey. Today, let's walk together, celebrate together, and dream of a future where everyone thrives. Black History Month is Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion! Can you truly celebrate Black History Month while concurrently opposing DEI initiatives? Navigating workplace complexities for Black individuals becomes even more challenging amid ongoing national attacks on DEI. If applauding the dismantling of Affirmative Action, cutting program funding, undermining DEI efforts, and neglecting equitable opportunities is deemed celebration, it prompts reflections on genuine commitment versus performative virtue-signaling during BHM. How will you honor BHM? #BlackHistoryMonth #DEI #diversityandinclusion #inclusion #equity #diversityequityinclusion #inclusionmatters #equality #publishing #speaking #socialjustice
