Radioactive sources (RS) contain radioactive materials of a particular unstable form of an element emitting radiation (energy that travels through space at a speed of light). While radioactive sources are essential for wireline logging operations, they can pose a significant radiation hazard if not handled properly. #OnThisDay in 1957, the Shippingport Atomic Power Station went critical at 12:30 a.m. becoming the nation’s first full-scale atomic electric power plant. This pressure vessel housed the original reactor core that produced 68 megawatts at full power. A new core was added in the 1960s to increase the electrical generating capacity to 100 megawatts. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) later converted the plant into a light-water breeder reactor to test the feasibility of using thorium and uranium-233 to breed more fuel than was consumed by the plant while generating electricity.
