I am very pleased to share that my abstract to the World Engineering Convention 2023 has been accepted. It is titled "How to Increase the Chance of Project Success".
Across the world there is growing challenge to ensure a sustainable engineering and construction industry to design, construct and maintain the vital infrastructure to support our economic, social and environmental wellbeing of our communities.
The paper supports the key topic 04.2 WFEO Standing Technical Committee on Engineering Capacity Building (CECB) to develop and maintain a sustainable engineering related work force as well as informed decision makers in Governments and in the private sector. Also, SDG9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure to build reliant infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
These goals will be achieved with the requisite technical and non-technical competencies and capability for this new era with greater complexity. The technical factors in utilising alternate methods of project delivery, with greater collaborative contracting and harnessing new technologies. The non-technical competencies or human factors with enhanced communication, cooperation, coordination, trust-based relationships, leadership, strategy and governance, influence and culture. Our industry will need enhanced skills and expertise.
Unfortunately, there have been too many examples of major projects that have failed to achieve the projects objectives, with delays, overspend and operational issues. Whilst the engineering and construction industry (and insurers) may have borne the brunt of the project losses, these costs must come back to the community on future projects. Rather than technical and non-technical risks being manifested on major projects by happenstance, they can be mitigated or managed through a structured process of innovative risk management as the key ingredient to the assurance of project success.
