These findings indicate that intrauterine exposure to SARS-CoV2 infection can have consequences for offspring in the first year of life, including developmental delay. Given the importance of appropriate early child development for improved future health and educational outcomes, it is extremely important to understand the impact of maternal infection on infants in order to recommend appropriate early interventions. Also, healthcare providers should be aware of the needs of pregnant and postpartum women, and public measures should guarantee the appropriate support for families with young children, in order to mitigate long-term effects on maternal and children’s health.

September is #NewbornScreeningAwarenessMonth. Currently, all 50 states offer NBS programs ensuring almost every child in the US is tested for serious disorders within 48 hours post-birth. Because of this screening, every year 12,500 babies and their families have early access to treatment and care following disease detection. Despite the success of #NBS programs in the country, there is still more to be done to ensure all conditions in the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) are consistently screened for. VOZ Advisors joins the #raredisease community to raise awareness of newborn screening (NBS) in the US. Patients who receive a diagnosis of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn, or HDFN, a rare, maternal-fetal condition, can be faced with many unknowns due to the lack of treatment options and information available about the disease. Listening and learning from patients like Molly, Hannah and Shaye about their experiences with HDFN motivates our team to uncover the underlying causes of the disease and bring forth a potential new treatment option that is safe and effective for pregnant patients and their babies. Research has shown that the best chance of preventing disease progression in children affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and supporting access to potentially life-saving treatment, is through newborn screening. Yet, despite one baby being born with SMA every five days in the UK, it is not currently included in the national screening programme. Together with the SMA and rare disease communities, we are calling on the National Screening Committee (UKNSC) to make a decision on whether SMA screening for newborns will be implemented in this country as soon as possible. Find out more, and read the recommendations from our policy report here: https://lnkd.in/eznXsf9R Because for babies born with SMA, #EveryMomentMatters. #NovartisOK

Nearly 20% of babies born with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection will face birth defects or other long-term health issues, such as hearing loss and growth problems. This Congenital Cytomegalovirus Awareness Month, here are insights from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: - Pregnant women can transfer the condition to their babies, leading to congenital disabilities, hearing loss and developmental delay. - It is the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the United States, affecting about 1 in 200 babies. - CMV is a common virus that infects people of all ages. More than half of adults have been infected with CMV by age 40. We're empowering Women's Health Nurse Practitioners (WHNPs) with the latest knowledge and tools to educate pregnant mothers about CMV prevention strategies and early detection. Join us in raising awareness about CMV and supporting mothers and babies everywhere. Please visit https://bit.ly/aboutCMV for more information. #CMVAwareness #BirthDefects

Children are less severely affected by SARS-CoV-2 than adults, however, according to a new study although rare for neonates to be affected, severe neonatal illness was more common during the delta variant period. The number of infants with fatality outcomes was associated with premature deliveries because of maternal Covid-19. In addition to this, it is shown that more neonates were born very preterm and required invasive ventilation. https://lnkd.in/eJmrtdhM
