The Workforce Crisis in Health and Human Services began long before the Pandemic! It is time we address the root causes. Skill Requirements and Compensation of Direct Service Workforce: In 2014, the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) funded the Road Map of Core Competencies for the Direct Service Workforce, a multi-phased research project implemented through the National Direct Service Workforce Resource Center (DSW RC) to identify a common set of core competencies across community-based LTSS sectors: aging, behavioral health (including mental health and substance use), intellectual/ developmental disabilities and physical disabilities. This research aims to assist states, CMS and other federal agencies to take a more comprehensive and standardized approach to DSW education and training and quality improvement through the creation of a nationally validated core competency set. https://lnkd.in/eV5RVc7k The core competencies recommended are still needed skills sets of the workforce. As this research was completed over a decade ago, the curriculum for each competency should include how to effectively use the current technology available to better support people and staff. For instance: 1. Post pandemic, most health care practitioners now have electronic portals to store and forward information between patients, practitioners and insurance companies, yet many caregivers are still relying on calling and waiting for calls back to manage people's healthcare. Moreover, if a patient has several specialists not in the same network, then there are multiple portals to interface with that can become cumbersome and confusing. However, creating an avenue to protect people's privacy, yet allowing and training caregivers/families to access necessary information to better assist in the coordination of care is essential. 2. The different types of Remote Patient Monitoring devices that are becoming available that would assist a person living at home are growing exponentially. We should be teaching people and the DSW that assist them, how to use these devices and the data obtained to proactively manage chronic health care conditions. This could assist in reducing the burden on emergency medical services we are seeing today! All states should be incorporating the core competencies, with the inclusion of modern technologies, into their health and human services programs offered at colleges. In addition, the health services programs in vocational schools should be the first place these skills are taught. #Healthequity #HealthandHumanServices #EnablingTechnology #Workforce https://lnkd.in/ef7jZ2Te

I was talking to a colleague yesterday about a hiring decision he is working on and remembered a saying I came across many years ago... "Hire slow, fire fast." Getting the right person for the job takes much time and thought. If you rush into it, it's almost certain it won't work out and will end being a waste of time for both the company and the employee. Once a hire is made, if it becomes obvious a hiring mistake was made and the person is a bad fit the best course of action is to end the work relationship quickly. Bad hires rarely get better with time. Ultimately, it comes down to finding the right fit for both the company and the candidate and to do so the best course of action is to hire slowly. The nature of caregiving often leads to isolation, with limited interaction with colleagues. This isolation can breed dissatisfaction. Our mission is to counter this by encouraging every agency is making sure every caregiver feels like an integral part of their team, instilling in them the confidence to excel in their roles. Strategies? 1. Comprehensive Orientation: We recommend kickstarting their journey with a solid orientation that equips them with the fundamental knowledge required for success. 2. Client Introductions: We firmly believe in the power of first impressions. That's why we recommend never skipping client introductions. 3. Frequent Communication: Communication is the lifeline of retention, especially for newly onboarded caregivers. We recommend proactively reaching out through texts and calls to gauge their well-being, address concerns, and offer assistance. We understand that leaving them feeling supported is pivotal in their decision to stay. 4. Caregiver Mentors: We recommend having seasoned caregivers take on the role of mentors, guiding and supporting their less-experienced peers. These mentors accompany new caregivers on initial client visits and maintain regular check-ins throughout their first 90 days. 5. Continuous Training: We firmly believe that learning never stops. To ensure our caregivers have the skills, certifications, and confidence they need, we recommend conducting regular training meetings. 6. Recognition: Caregivers are the unsung heroes of our industry. We understand that recognition is key to their job satisfaction. We recommend making it a point to acknowledge their dedication and hard work through gestures like handwritten thank-you notes, personal telephone calls or texts, public recognition among peers, and thoughtful gift cards or vouchers. At Carework, we're on a mission to help companies attract, hire, and retain caregivers. We recognize the vital role caregivers play in providing quality home care, and we're here to partner in your agency's success. 🌐 buff.ly/43dqCSw 🌟🤝 #CaregiverRetention #EmpowerCaregivers #HomeCareHeroes

Violence against nurses and other healthcare workers is a troubling reality in #healthcare. Recent studies have found that roughly 40% of healthcare professionals have experienced physical altercations while on the job. Many tools can assist with increasing #safety in healthcare settings, including enhancing #RTLS alert systems, increasing communication methods between team members, and integrating alarm systems on-site. Tech is an important partner for medical staff. The faster reports can be made, the easier it is to get help and deter escalations.

Creating unique value for companies of all sizes through Venture Consulting with Pathom's Value Discovery Methodology.
This came across my feed again today and I realized I was in a different mindset because I was struck by a different idea (practicing #ValueDiscovery skills). The #Hospitality industry knows well the value of "knowing the customer" in a way they could delight them with simple person-centered things. The fact that everyone is slightly different and it's "the little things" that matter. Think about the last time you checked into a hotel and compare that to the last time you had great hospitality (perhaps a resort, cruise, or vacation destination). Can you imagine a hospitality approach in #skilledNursingFacility #DementiaCare? Life Highlights
No fancy pictures for this post, just a story. We had an administrator during a demo of Life Highlights tell us a story from just a few weeks ago. She talked about how a certain CNA was really good at learning about the resident's lives that she cared for. So much so that the CNA was considered a 'gold standard' when it came to senior care. We commented on how great it is to have employees who have the ability and skill to do this. The administrator then went on to say, "It's all good, except when the CNA leaves her shift, then all that knowledge goes with her." "This," as she pointed to the framed Life Highlights sitting in front of her, "would help that knowledge cross shifts and help all the staff care for our residents." Yes, the administrator did sign up for Life Highlights 😊 Life Highlights puts high value information in optimized ink to data ratios. Quick, simple, and always on - Life Highlights provides new ways for caregivers to interact with the seniors in their care. #seniorcare #LifeHighlights @Pathom Inc.
