You'll need to find something else to keep the kids occupied. If you've ordered anything from Amazon lately (and really, who hasn't), then you've noticed wads of brown butcher impersonating as packing material. Well, ditching the plastic air pillows in its boxes is part of Amazon's grand environmental plan. Ah, those plastic air pillows are going the way of the dodo bird at least at Amazon. The ecommerce giant has already replaced 95 percent of plastic air packaging with fully recyclable paper filler. And the plan is to stop using plastic air packaging by the end of this year. That's a big deal when the company had been using 15 billion plastic pillows. Getting rid of air pillows is only a drop in the environmental bucket. Estimates have Amazon generated 208 million pounds of plastic waste from its packaging in the U.S. alone in 2022. Popping the air pillow is actually part of an ongoing commitment to reduce packaging waste. Back in 2015, Amazon introduced the "Ships in Product Packaging" program in 2015, which allows products to be shipped in their original packaging, minimizing the need for Amazon's traditional boxes. You might have heard of Amazon, global eCommerce giant, who recently announced they have ended their use of all non-recyclable packaging across European markets—switching to three curbside recyclable packaging solutions for all products. The three packaging systems include a flexible paper bag, board envelope, or standard corrugated box. I love to see Amazon continue to lead innovation in #sustainable shipping. Not in reaction to any government regulation, but because it's good business (they both lead and follow their #customer's aspirations). I'm cycling in Europe now---in #Croatia at the moment, and happy to see: #plastic bottle tops now designed to remain attached to the bottle---no bottle tops or plastic perforated ring litter---and, recycling bins for plastic are the norm. Amazon has played a big role in fostering our “need” to get shipments immediately. I appreciate the company’s continued efforts to try to reduce packaging waste now. Its latest effort: cutting out plastic “air pillows” from boxes. Ninety-five percent of those pillows will be replaced with paper fillers made from 100% recycled content. It may seem like a small gesture, but when you consider how much plastic this adds up to, even just over a year of one avid Amazon customer, and it becomes significant. We know that we can be kindest to the environment by: 💚 Reusing as much as possible and passing down products among family and community 💚 Not needing to recycle anything in the blue bin or come up with better substitutes to begin with. But the Pandora’s box has been opened, our fascination with clicking, ordering and peering outside for the signature blue van is here to stay. It's Friday!!! 🙌 This week, an article from Fast Company struck me particularly hard as I've observed a new phenomenon in my neighborhood: a massive truck, stationed on the main avenue, from which Amazon workers use trolleys to distribute the packages throughout a 4 block radius. This sight, a daily fixture for weeks, underscores just how much we consume. And while our local landscape fills with the comings and goings of delivery, the article sheds light on a global contrast in Amazon’s practices. According to Oceana, Amazon generated 208 million pounds of plastic waste in the U.S. alone in 2022, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. Globally, however, Amazon reports an 11.6% reduction in plastic use, a change driven by regulations outside the U.S. The increasing plastic usage by Amazon in the U.S., despite global reductions, highlights a missed opportunity for leadership in sustainable practices. Amazon prides itself on being a hub of innovation, yet where is the push for sustainable packaging solutions across all markets? During the lockdown, there was a significant increase in online orders and purchases. Unfortunately, this led to a surge in #plasticpackaging waste. Whether this plastic packaging is recyclable or not remains a separate question.     After conducting an investigation on Amazon, it was discovered that only 9% of the plastic packaging was being successfully recycled on average. As a result, Amazon has taken several initiatives to reduce its plastic packaging. For example, plastic packaging pillows have been replaced with 100% recyclable paper material in 100% recyclable boxes. Additionally, Amazon has created a Frustration-Free packaging programme (FFP) that enables buyers to switch to more sustainable packaging that is easy to open and requires less padding for shipping.
