🌟 Around the Block: June Highlights 🌟 As the CEO of Little Rock Water Reclamation Authority, my role extends far beyond the walls of my office. Here are a few highlights from my excursions in June. 1. JUNETEENTH IN DA ROCK: If you missed this year’s celebration, you missed a treat! Our Outreach Team and other utility companies hosted booths in the new “Kids Zone.” Activities were age-based, and I had too much fun with the younger kids as they sorted items, deciding whether to flush them down the toilet 🚽 or toss them in the trash can🗑️. Thanks Mosaic Templars Cultural Center for the vision & opportunity!  2. APAC GRADUATION: I had the profound honor of being the keynote speaker for the Arkansas Public Administration Consortium (APAC) graduation where I discussed, “Your Public Service. Your Power.” APAC, a program through the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, nurtures future leaders in the public sector. Four LRWRA team members graduated from APAC programs this year which added to the excitement of the day.🎓   3. BRING YOUR KIDS TO WORK DAY: I always have a great time sharing our work with the next generation of water professionals. Forty-two children (ages 8–18) spent the day with us, enjoying hands-on activities. From engineering gumdrop and toothpick structures to making bath bombs with our Lab techs, it was all about fun and learning. Plus, kids got to see where their parents or grandparents work. A win-win!  4. LEADERSHIP GREATER LITTLE ROCK: As a graduate of Leadership Greater Little Rock Class XXXII (the best class), I attended the recent graduation of Class XXXIX. It’s always a pleasure to see familiar faces and congratulate the newest graduates; it’s even better when one of those graduates is a co-worker! Lindsey James 2023-24 Knowlton Ambassador Meet Lindsey James! Lindsey is from Vincent, Ohio, and is majoring in Architecture and minoring in Business. Lindsey currently serves as the president of SERVitecture, an organization that encourages Knowlton student and faculty involvement through community service opportunities and organizes the popular annual Fashion Schau. Lindsey took a few minutes to answer our questions about life as a Knowlton student. --- Q: What do you enjoy most about being a student in Knowlton? A: I love the creativity the majors bring and the community that Knowlton cultivates. Q: What advice do you have for new Knowlton students? A: Enjoy your major as much as you enjoy your time outside of your coursework. Having fun with your work as well as making time for your well-being is important! Q: What final advice do you have for prospective or newly admitted students? A: My advice is to try to align your GEs or extra coursework to something you’re interested in, even if that interest is outside of your major. You do best in courses you are intrigued by! 💡Presenting and attending the COSA Seaside Conference was illuminating. This year, I had the opportunity to facilitate dozens of professional learning sessions for educators, paraprofessionals, and counselors. I also planned and hosted several collaboratives to break down silos and bring community partners and school community members together. Despite all of this experience, being in a licensure program for educational administration, and my belief that hierarchical power does not make people more important, I was extremely nervous about presenting to administrators. 🪞However, the conference offered me several key takeaways: 1. I have an incredible team and we do great things together. While I had the privilege of planning our presentation, it wasn't all on my shoulders. My incredible colleagues showed up brilliantly, and we were able to share our approach to supporting Student Behavioral Health & Wellness with a group of 50 administrators who care deeply about the people they serve in different Oregon regions. 2. Administrators are just people, each with their own hopes, fears, and cultural identities that make up the multifaceted person they present to the world. 3. Legal compliance is important, but in order for me to remain in alignment with my WHY as an educational leader, I must continually refocus on my equity lens, which involves a vision for inclusion and belonging for all kids. 4. The power of coming together as a team and connecting as human beings is vital for staff. It reinforces our shared mission and strengthens our community. There are more thoughts percolating, but that's at the forefront for me right now. #COSA #COSALEADERSHIP

Advocacy. Studying history helps us understand and grapple with complex questions and dilemmas by examining how the past has shaped (and continues to shape) global, national, and local relationships between societies and people. Studying current events helps students better understand their global community and the different cultures across the world. It is very easy to get caught up in our own lives and problems, and learning about current events can both ground and remind students of the world that exists beyond their communities. WEW’s summer series sponsored by m2e Consulting Engineers presented the life and study of Traci Miller of Miller Construction Company. Grace B. an intern who graduated May 2023 and interned locally in Miami was a great candidate for this experience. What we know is that history and legacy has a story inevitably to be told (who will tell it?) The life and legacy of Traci as seen through the eyes of young architect Grace is forthcoming and will be shared across several platforms. In the words of Grace B. "Traci is a true renaissance woman." As classes begin at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University we can only imagine how the students and friends of Grace in the Master's program will be indirectly impacted by the study of Traci's life. #mentortracing #advocacy #education #information #historyhasastory #whowilltellit #wewsummerseries Wishing all returning students a great school year!
