Happy Founder's Day to all who celebrate! While I am no longer working for and with the Brothers of the Christian Schools and their partners, I am the professional I am today because of their careful guidance of my development. As an HR professional, St. John Baptist de La Salle was most certainly someone that I can look to for people management inspiration: his writings (Conduct of Schools, the Letters to the Brothers, Civility and Decorum) could be considered to be his version of employee handbooks. He spent time visiting the various schools and agencies that he sent the Brothers to, and he found himself adjudicating A LOT of employee relations issues between the Brothers. 😬 John Baptist de La Salle's engagement with the early Brothers, the families, and those who he rented space from is a good example of how nimble HR folks need to be with stakeholders. Today isn't just Founder's Day; it is also the day that Pope Leo XIII promulgated the encyclical, "Rarem Novarem," which informs our understanding of the rights of workers. At the time, it was a revolutionary document and it remains prophetic today. He said, "Hence, by degrees it has come to pass that working men have been surrendered, isolated and helpless, to the hardheartedness of employers and the greed of unchecked competition. The mischief has been increased by rapacious usury, which, although more than once condemned by the Church, is nevertheless, under a different guise, but with like injustice, still practiced by covetous and grasping men. To this must be added that the hiring of labor and the conduct of trade are concentrated in the hands of comparatively few; so that a small number of very rich men have been able to lay upon the teeming masses of the laboring poor a yoke little better than that of slavery itself." These two contributions for me as an HR professional inform how I work with employees entrusted to my care and, how I try to interact with those I partner with.
Each year, Lasallians honor St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and patron saint of teachers, on May 15. At Christian Brothers Services we strive to continue the educational mission De La Salle set forth. While we may not have students in classrooms, our work in understanding, protecting, and guiding our members and providing plans and programs that help them complete their distinct missions, is a legitimate expression of St. De La Salle’s vision.

Today, we honor Juneteenth, marking the end of slavery in the U.S. This day represents freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of those who fought for justice. As a minority-owned business, Juneteenth holds special meaning for us at Buckner and Sons Masonry. What Juneteenth Means to Us: Heritage & History: We stand on the shoulders of those who paved the way, allowing us to build and grow in an industry once inaccessible to many. Community & Unity: Just as masonry connects stones to form strong structures, Juneteenth unites us in the shared pursuit of equity and community strength. Progress & Innovation: Inspired by our heritage, we are committed to advancing diversity and creating opportunities in our field.

Memorial Day is one of the most important days we recognize as citizens of the United States of America. This quote by Harry S. Truman helps us understand that it is our duty to reflect on and express our gratitude for the service of those who have fought to protect our rights and freedoms. Many individuals have given their lives to enshrine the daily comforts and feelings of happiness we are able to enjoy, and we should never take this for granted. Originally, this day celebrated the end of the Civil War, but it now acts as a solemn reminder of all that we have fought for as a nation throughout our proud history: freedom, liberty, democracy, and fairness. Pausing regular life to remember the sacrifices of those who came before and celebrating all that we have yet to do as a great nation is one small way to show our understanding of the complex and painful histories we represent as a nation. When so much of the world is experiencing so much grief, we owe it to ourselves to reflect on our own past and all that we have worked together to protect and provide for the citizens of the United States. This Memorial Day, as we enjoy the beginning of summer, let us also solemnly consider our ongoing responsibility to uphold and fight for those values that comprise this beautiful country: freedom, fairness, and equality for all. #memorialday #freedom #equalityforall

What holds a nation together? In Kinsley, Kansas, there’s a sign that marks the midpoint of America. It’s 1,561 miles to New York and the same to San Francisco. The sign is simple, but I’ve always felt that it stands for something bigger. It shows that America is one, from coast to coast. The sign is still there, where highways 50 and 56 cross. It’s a reminder that the heartland is the backbone of the country, not just a place you fly over. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, living in St. Louis for 14.5 years felt like being in the center of America. From St. Louis, TWA flights connected both coasts and globally. You could feel the pulse of the nation. Same in Minneapolis MN, and Hudson in WI for the past 22.5 years. That sign in Kinsley was on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1939. It linked Kinsley to the New York and San Francisco World’s Fairs. It wasn’t just a sign on the map. It was a sign of what America stands for. America is built on freedom, equality, and opportunity. These are not just words. They are the core of what makes this country strong. I moved to the U.S. in August 1978, and I respect these values deeply. Here, anyone can make something of themselves. It’s a place where your effort matters more than your background. The heartland keeps the country together, even when the coasts grab the headlines. That sign isn’t just a piece of history. It’s a reminder of what makes us one nation. The balance it represents is fragile. How do we keep that balance? How do we ensure our unity holds? In Kinsley, the answer might be simple. The sign is still there. Maybe that’s enough to remind us of what it means to be American. #america #balance #equality #freedom #geography #heartland #history #kinsley #opportunity #unity #values

Though the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, it would not be until June 19th, 1865, when approximately 2,000 Union troops marched down to Galveston Bay, Texas to announce that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas. Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day! The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. Quote for Reflection: “Of all Emancipation Day observances, Juneteenth falls closest to the summer solstice (this Thursday, June 20), the longest day of the year, when the sun, at its zenith, defies the darkness in every state, including those once shadowed by slavery. By choosing to celebrate the last place in the South that freedom touched — reflecting the mystical glow of history and lore, memory and myth, as Ralph Ellison evoked in his posthumous novel, Juneteenth — we remember the shining promise of emancipation, along with the bloody path America took by delaying it and deferring fulfillment of those simple, unanticipating words in Gen. Granger’s original order No. 3: that ‘This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves.’” - Henry Louis Gates, Jr. #fyp #explorepage #nerdygirlsuccess #changingthelandscapeofleadership #nonprofit #Juneteenth
