Folks, it's here. The day someone inquired, "What do you do exactly?" I often liken my role to that of a firefighter - extinguishing fires wherever they spark, often without any advance notice. 👩🚒 But I also couldn't agree more with these insights from Mary Hines on the CoS role - 🎖 Thriving in the shadows, always! Being a CoS is about 'getting ish done' without always seeking the limelight. Expect a lot of behind-the-scenes tasks that may not always be glamourous. 🎖 The unofficial therapist role is real! Listening with empathy builds trust, making executing strategic plans much smoother. Building strong relationships is at the core of what we do. 🎖Everything is your job. With the whole company as your department, leading cross-functionally is a full-time gig. It indeed is isolating, but extremely rewarding as well! 🌟 #chiefofstaff
It’s my favorite time of year! And it also happens to mark just over a year for me as a Chief of Staff. Oh, What fun! 🎄 So many people have reached out to me over the year to connect over what it means to be a CoS. So, it’s the perfect time for an end of year recap. Here’s my top 3️⃣ reasons on why you shouldn’t be a Chief of Stuff 😊 1️⃣ You don’t like to listen: ✅ Guess who’s the unofficial therapist of the organization? You! It’s you. You learn so much just by listening and asking probing questions. Listing with empathy goes a long way with building trust. Trusting relationships allow you to execute on the strategic plan and vision of the CEO a lot easier. ❌ So, if you don’t like to listen, this isn’t the role for you. 2️⃣ You like the limelight: ✅ There is a fair amount of work that you pick up simply because no one else wants to do it. Sometimes it’s not glamorous work and it can be behind the scenes tactical tasks. BUT if you do it right and do it well, you’ll establish yourself quickly as the go to person for BIG ROCK initiatives. ❌ IF you don’t like to “just get ish done” this job isn’t for you. 3️⃣ You prefer to stay in your own lane: ✅ “Cause I got a really big team and they need some really big things.” 🎵 But seriously, the entire company is your department. Leading with influence cross-functionally is your full-time job. If you prefer to own all your initiatives to the end, zero in on a specialty, or work on specific projects, then ❌ No, this job won’t fill your mental cup. Honestly the CoS job is incredibly rewarding, but can also be lonely, especially if you are the only CoS in your organization. However, if you manage to build authentic relationships with the executive team and other members of the broader organization the job starts to become less and less isolating. SO major shout out to Kamau Massey, Brian Li, & Kelley Hippler for making this role an opportunity I’ll forever be grateful for. And thanks to Clara Ma for creating the Ask a Chief of Staff community. It’s grown so much over the year and has been amazing for building camaraderie. Now let me get back to doing more stuff! I hope your holidays are filled with love, light, and happiness. Mary

⭐ March’s Olly Olly All Stars ⭐ "A huge congratulations to Shannon K. and Julian V. both. You truly embody Olly Olly’s values every day! What do their managers say about them? “Shannon is always smiling. She has a great attitude and comes in every day fired up to work. She is always willing to help others out. She is one of the hardest workers in the office, often staying up late calling Hawaii and Alaska at night. Shannon is one of the most curious people in the office. If she runs into a new or weird situation, she will look toward more experienced rep or manager. She is skilled herself, but she is always curious how other people would handle things so she can constantly grow. Shannon is known for showing up for her teammates, whether it is help with a demo, or hanging out on a Saturday afternoon, you can count on Shannon.” “Julian consistently embodies our company values and excels in his role, but he's recently gone above and beyond for our entire team. He exemplifies initiative by taking ownership of improving processes. He identified a bottleneck in our new build writing efficiency and, without prompting, dedicated the past three months to developing a new system. Julian's dedication extends beyond just his own work. He readily helps his colleagues, ensuring a positive and supportive team environment. This willingness to share his knowledge and expertise contributes significantly to the overall success of the department.” #leadwithhumilityandcuriosity #showupforoneanother #teamwork
