⚽️ While the Premier League is sitting out this weekend due to international games being played, it’s the perfect time to reflect on some of the incredible sustainability efforts being made by our favorite football clubs. The beautiful game isn’t just about thrilling goals and nail-biting finishes, it’s also about making a positive impact off the pitch. 𝐵𝑢𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠 𝑠𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑎 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑡𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑐𝑙𝑢𝑏 (𝑜𝑟 𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑎 𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑠 𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑚)? It’s about more than just reducing carbon footprints or recycling waste. For these organizations, sustainability encompasses a holistic approach to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic viability. This means implementing energy-efficient practices in stadiums, promoting sustainable transport options for fans, reducing single-use plastics, and engaging in community outreach programs. It’s about creating a positive impact that extends beyond the pitch, ensuring that the love for the game contributes to a healthier planet and a more equitable society. By embracing sustainability, football clubs (a more broadly sports clubs) are not only preserving the environment but also inspiring millions of fans to adopt more sustainable lifestyles. Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is leading the charge with their comprehensive sustainability strategy. From reducing single-use plastics to promoting recycling and using renewable energy, they are setting a high bar. Their commitment to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework shows they are serious about making a difference. Over at Liverpool Football Club, the focus is on “The Red Way” strategy. This includes energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable transport options for fans. It’s all about creating a greener future while cheering on the Reds! Arsenal F.C is also making impressive strides. With goals to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, they are truly aiming for the top corner of the sustainability net. Their participation in the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework further underscores their dedication. These clubs are not just playing the beautiful game; they are also playing for a beautiful planet. So, as you enjoy the matches this weekend, take a moment to cheer for their efforts off the pitch as well. Here’s to a greener future for football and beyond! #SustainabilityInSports #GreenGoals #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #PremierLeague #Football

A really powerful video by the 'Football Needs our Planet’ campaign (and great job on the voiceover Debra Nelson) 🔥⚽️ The campaign collates resources into a climate boot-bag, and focuses on raising awareness about the impact of #climate change on football and the urgent need for the sport to adopt more #sustainable practices. It also highlights what players, clubs and fans alike stand to lose as a result of erratic weather patterns, rising temperatures, flooding, and many more extreme conditions, brought about by human-induced climate change 📈 These impacts are already being felt today - in the light of the recent images from AFC Wimbledon’s grounds, the need to take significant action has never been more pressing. Whether it be adopting new practices in stadiums, promoting #sustainabletravel, encouraging #recycling or simply spreading the word about the need to change, there are so many ways that fans can help to protect our sport, and our planet 🌍 Sustainability in football is no longer optional. Through collective action, we can ensure that football remains a unifying force for good, while helping to protect the planet for future generations ♻️ Head over to their website: 👇 https://lnkd.in/ep6-yDVm Credit to Heard – organisation, Pledgeball, Cool Down - The Sport for Climate Action Network (which we are part of) and This Fan Girl for their hard work on this. #FootballNeedsOurPlanet #FootballForFuture #sustainability

For all sustainability professionals working so hard to make their companies more Sustainable I recommend watching this video from basketbal player Giannis answering the question whether the season was a failure because they didn’t win. A few messages that resonate with me: - you don’t always win. Keep the end goal in sight to make it happen next time. - come back next year and try to be better - build strong routines - not winning is not a failure, it’s steps towards a goal - always be respectful and try not to make it personal TOSCA - Tribe of Sustainability Change Agents

The 'Green Pitch: New Frontiers for #Sustainable #Football Conference,' held on May 31 at UCL - University College London, focused on the #environmental #sustainability of football and the sport's contribution to achieving the United Nations' 2030 Agenda goals. Coordinated by Francesca Medda - Director of UCL Institute of Finance and Technology - the event was attended by leading figures from UEFA, including Michele Uva - Director of Social and Environmental Sustainability; Andrea Traverso - Director Financial Sustainability and Research; Charles Frémont - Innovation Hub Manager, who presented the important Champion Innovate project; Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) CEO Maheta Molango; Pledgeball CEO Katie Cross; David Wheeler, professional footballer and PFA Sustainability Champion and Alessandro Umberto Belluzzo, Founding Partner of our firm. The focus of discussion was UEFA's sustainability strategy, which includes targets for environmental and human rights to be achieved by 2030. The importance of European clubs adhering to UEFA's guidelines was emphasised, highlighting the increasing adoption of sustainable measures by clubs. These measures include using #renewableenergy to power stadiums, adopting uniforms made from environmentally #sustainablematerials, reducing plastic use at matches, ensuring proper waste management at stadiums, and promoting sustainable transportation options. Awareness of #environmental #sustainability in #football goes beyond the players, teams and fans. Footballers' focus on sustainability issues positions them as role models for both teams and fans, necessitating ongoing initiatives in this area. From a legal perspective, Alessandro Umberto Belluzzo, who has long advised footballers and athletes, noted that while there are no specific contractual rules yet, football clubs can still promote environmental sustainability through contract negotiations with players and in selecting and contracting sponsors.

The global football industry continues to grow at a remarkable pace, and the importance of sustainability within the sport has become more relevant than ever. One critical area to address is the future of our stadiums once the final whistle blows. How can we ensure these iconic venues remain economically viable and environmentally responsible after the excitement of match day fades? The World Football Summit explores innovative, sustainable strategies to maximize the use of stadiums post-events. They discuss ways to drive both economic sustainability and environmental stewardship in these large-scale infrastructures. Looking forward to engaging in meaningful conversations and learning from fellow experts on how we can shape a more sustainable future for football. https://lnkd.in/dkjcSVq5 #Sustainability #FootballIndustry #StadiumManagement #EnvironmentalResponsibility #Football #AI Numerza Sports Management
