Thanks to the European Creative Hubs Network I was fortunate to get the opportunity to attend Creative Skills Week 2023 in Vienna last week. What an amazing few days in a beautiful city! Here are some of the bits I found most interesting and relevant on skills and future skills for creatives and things I will be thinking about from the sessions when planning our Blick activities for next year. - For the creative sector to grow and maximise the impact it can have on the world itโs important for creatives to know and understand the skills they have and perhaps more importantly the incredible value these skills can create. - Active resilience, the ability to continually learn from experience and become progressively stronger over time will become increasingly important. - For creatives to thrive and grow and sell their skills to diverse markets it is important for them to understand the mindsets of other people and sectors. Are there ways we can help creatives with this understanding? - Creative skills are often transferable to new sectors and markets. How can we educate creatives and support them to transfer their skills to new sectors to create new opportunities, innovations and value? - Microlearning โ short bursts (10 mins) of learning can be invaluable for creative freelancers who need to be versatile and adaptable in fast paced environments. - Financial literacy is a known skills gap for creatives. Can we provide financial knowledge and confidence to creatives to improve their financial skills? - Unlearning โ the ability to be able to unlearn in order to relearn will be as important in the future as the ability to learn. - To continue to build future skills itโs important for ecosystems to be flexible and able to adapt, change and renew themselves. Are there ways we can facilitate learning and skills development for creatives that renew themselves so they remain relevant and meaningful? The cultural sector holds a unique position in society, bridging communities and fostering understanding of global issues. Institutions such as museums, operas, theatres, cultural centres, concert halls, and fairs are increasingly recognized for their potential role in promoting sustainable development. Frequently, they elevate public discourse making complex scientific concepts accessible and relatable. ๐๏ธ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐: While many cultural institutions pursue environmental certifications and play a crucial role in education and raising awareness, very few measure and assess their environmental impacts. They often lack long-term strategies to reduce their environmental footprint, and few present science-based evidences of their environmental performance, which is crucial for demonstrating genuine commitment and progress. Cultural institutions must move beyond short-term measures and develop comprehensive, long-term strategies for sustainability. This includes reducing environmental footprints, minimizing waste, and optimizing resource use. 2. Institutions should adopt science-based targets to transparently track and report their environmental performance, ensuring accountability and highlighting areas for improvement. 3. ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐น๐ฒ: As trusted knowledge sources, cultural institutions have a responsibility to lead by example. Aligning their operations with the EU Green Deal goals can set a standard for sustainability and demonstrate commitment to a greener future. This alignment not only enhances their credibility but also strengthens their role as educators and advocates for climate action. ๐ฑ Cultural institutions are not just repositories of the past and educators of the present, but also active participants in building a sustainable future. By promoting critical thinking, emotional engagement, and public participation, they help create a more informed and proactive citizenry committed to sustainability. However, they should lead by example, integrating science-based environmental strategies and taking concrete actions to reduce their own environmental impact, thereby setting a powerful example for the public they educate. #CulturalSector #ClimateChange #Sustainability #EUGreenDeal #ScienceBasedTargets #LeadByExample #GreenFuture #Museums #mossgreen #DrivingPositiveChange

Vibrant Matter is grateful to be part of the Green School by IETM - International network for contemporary performing arts : Extensive and practical training for IETM members on greening tools to develop greening projects with support from experts and training from the field. A two-month-long training programme consisting of a series of workshops, peer working sessions and coachings, culminating in each of us writing/creating a project plan to be presented on the 7th of December. The 3 workshop session were: - Climate Justice as the foundation for organisational environmental policy by Sarah OโHare from Creative Carbon and an opening talk on the topic of Climate Justice by Dr Vishwas Satgar Climate/Culture - Self Assessment as a road to Green Action Plan by Emmanuelle Lejeune - Sustainable Cultural Management (Or how to lead in times of transition) by Iphigenia Taxopolou Currently I in the working-group "Sustainability and the performing arts in the context of Greening Principles and Strategies" facilitated by Mike Van Graan and with Pedro Affonso Ivo Franco Two of many questions coming up in our group are: 1) For small scale arts organisations, what is the most impactful and meaningful way (or ways) in which they may address the questions of climate change/climate change mitigation, given their limited human capacity and resources? Is this a one-off action or a series of actions/activities over a period of time? 2) What does a decolonial approach to climate change mitigation mean for small arts organisations in Europe? My personal question: As an artist from Europe and therefor in a privileged position as to, a.o. what continent/countries are responsible for climate change and what continent/countries are mostly affected by it, I am interested in what a collaboration with somebody from the global south around this subject could be and consist of. If you have any thoughts or other questions, I would be happy to read or hear them or talk with you. More to come For a green and decolonial transition ๐

#GreenJobsย are now an immense part of our lives due to the prevalent issue our world is facing โ climate change. They are definitely one of the solutions in our arsenal to help find alternate and sustainable ways - to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, to efficiently use raw materials including water and fossil fuels, for renewable energy options, and to help restore biodiversity and ecosystems. But unfortunately skill gaps and shortages of skilled resources is a major challenge in this space that is being addressed slowly but surely. As a #LEGO enthusiast and designer, I keenly follow the sustainable practices at the LEGO Group and have been fascinated by their efforts and commitment to SDG 12 specifically โ โResponsible Consumption and Productionโ. Not only are they looking at reducing environmental impact from their operations, but also sustainable materials for their brick and packaging thus reducing the carbon footprint of bringing their product to market. In fact, LEGO has been experimenting for years now to replace its petroleum-based bricks with environment friendly options โ including wheat and corn based materials, and even bricks from recycled plastic bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Unfortunately PET turned out as a not so viable option thanks to the higher carbon footprint (when at scale of production), but I believe the toymaker is even more committed to continue its efforts in this space. Personally,ย as an Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) student, we talk and debate about sustainability practices to a great extent and question the possibilities and challenges the future holds. Given my dream of working for the LEGO Group as a master builder, I sure hope to be part of the team testing out possibilities of alternate materials for the most loved and recognized brand / bricks by children and adults alike! ** Check out Ashoka University Beyond High School magazine for more information on green jobs and other interesting articles https://lnkd.in/gjb5b-S6 #AshokaUniversity #AshokaForHighSchoolers #BeyondHighSchool #AshokaHorizons #ChartYourPathWithYSP #Magazine #LEGO #LEGOSustainability #GreenJobs #GreenCareers #Sustainability

Connecting Audiences with Contemporary Art | Follow For Creative Inspiration | Championing Emerging Artists and Innovative Exhibitions | Emerging Art Curator
It's important to always be learning new skills, increasing your knowledge and sharing your expertise. Since I graduated with a Masters in Art Museum and Gallery Studies at the University of Leicester - I've made it my mission to continue learning. Today's training has been in refocusing and retraining on how our museums, heritage centres and art galleries can focus on their sustainable solutions. Below, I've included the link, it's a 6 minute read but really useful for anyone working in any of the above sectors. Key take-away points: โข Rather than going too big and trying to connect with the global issues, start with your collection,ย yourย building and your locality,โ โข Don't shy away from using your โbehind the scenesโ environmental work, suchย as reducing you're institutions carbon footprint, as a means of speaking to visitors. โข Make a visitor call-to-action to implement change, but also to spark curiosity and learning through dialogue and debates. โข Inspire donโt preach https://lnkd.in/gWDJE-Yj
