It was from the 1957 ESOMAR Congress (Göteborg, Sweden) and is the first time the ANA library search finds the word "innovation". And I love that, because rather than 'innovation' appearing as a boast, or promotion, or to establish credibility or superiority - it was applied to fuel debate/discussion. And 67 years and 2 days  (yes I really calculated that 15 June 57 > 17 June 24) - ESOMAR brings the research innovators to Chicago to not only learn and network, but also to debate and discuss topics and ideas. And I realise the amazing line-up of speakers in Chicago continue to question and define and push and advance and express their views. On my way home from Berlin Buzzwords and MICES! It was fantastic reconnecting with the #search #community and seeing all the innovative work being done. Over the three days, I noticed a clear distinction between emerging trends and well-established techniques. Many talks focused on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (#RAG), delving into the "how" - for example how to evaluate RAG systems and implement advanced RAG techniques. It’s evident that the industry is still navigating the complexities of RAG. Conversely, there were insightful sessions on the "why" behind techniques introduced a few years ago that are now delivering significant value in production. Learning to Rank (#LTR) was a highlight, with Teofilo Narboneta Zosa and Chingis Owana from Mercari, Inc. (thanks for the shout-out!) and Doug Turnbull (need to catch-up that one by watching the recording) sharing their practical experiences and successes with LTR. It was also inspiring to hear from Kentaro Takiguchi, Ruchi Juneja, and Dr. Johannes Peter about their journeys with vector and hybrid search, and the lessons they've learned along the way. Looking ahead, I predict that future Buzzwords, MICES, and other search conferences like Haystack will look even deeper into RAG. We'll likely see more success (and failure) stories, moving beyond the "how" to explore the "why" of RAG implementation. At the same time I don't see LTR, vector or hybrid search going away. These will continue to provide value as more companies will follow the successful strategies and lessons learned shared in the community at events like these. More than just a professor, Willy has been there, done it! Took the reins of his father’s business at a young age, started, scaled and sold several billion $ businesses. He is someone who any business leader, running any sized business can learn a lot from. His insights are priceless and could stimulate a pivot, new idea, etc worth millions.
