If your partner wants to read your text messages, that's a red flag, right? Why are we "ok" w/ our employers doing it then? A few points to share: Wells Fargo recently fired dozens of their Wealth Advisors who were guilty of faking keyboard activity. They were able to detect this fake activity by purchasing "employee tracking software" which is a booming category. In fact, Forbes has a round up of the top choices in this market... 💩 Hubstaff 💩 Teramind 💩 ActivTrak To give you a sense of size, Hubstaff is roughly a 100 person company doing $22m in ARR with roughly 16,000 customers. This according to an interview by its founder Jared Brown three months ago. So, employee tracking software is thing. And, employees faking activity is a thing. But, this is all so ridiculous. Each side should take a step back and use this as a litmus test. Employers If you're an employer and you WANT to monitor activity like this—you are measuring the wrong inputs. Creative work happens in sprints. Measure activity that supports outcomes. If your in CX or Sales, we already do this. Employees If you're finding the need to "fake" activity to seem "productive"—stop. You're not working at a company that is worth your time. Start interviewing for other jobs OR speak up. Give suggestions for "metrics that matter" vs time spent being busy. Story Time I'll wrap this up with a story I'll always remember from my first job. I started as a software engineer and I was stuck on coding problem. I spent hours trying to solve it but I couldn't. I called a more senior co-worker over. He spent about 5 minutes reviewing my code and fixed the issue. I said, "amazing, how did you figure this out so fast!" He laughed and replied, "I've spent hours in the past with this same problem, so now when I see it, I know what to do." Everyone in engineering will nod their head in agreement and probably has a similar story. Who should we pay more? The person who can solve a problem in 5 minutes or 5 hours? As the Wells Fargo incident shows, if you're asking this question, you're measuring the wrong things.
