Investors must take risks on spinouts to cure rare diseases. ❗️ Life-changing treatments are discovered in a laboratory, but they can’t reach patients without the investment community. Today is Rare Disease Day. Despite the term “rare,” approximately 300 million people worldwide live with such conditions. The UK has many great teams working together to conduct ground-breaking research. But with 7,000 rare diseases waiting for effective treatments, there’s a huge need to accelerate any effective solution on its journey from the laboratory and into mass production. As we recognize World Rare Disease Day, it is encouraging to see the increased attention to delivering solutions for rare and orphan diseases. While there have been significant advancements in treatments for #rarediseases, #patientaccessibility remains uncertain. This sentiment echoes the experience of a family grappling with cystinosis, finding hope in a #genetherapytrial while facing the daunting prospect of limited access. The challenges faced by families like this in accessing promising new treatments can stem from #regulatoryhurdles and interpretation of #clinicaltrial results. Increased collaboration between the industry and #regulatoryagencies with early, consistent feedback are vital to overcoming these obstacles. Improved communication and updated regulatory processes can enhance the likelihood of successful approvals to ensure that all patients battling these devastating diseases have access to life-saving therapies.
