Sunday Thoughts Serving the 0.1% and the Overlooked 99% A powerful play is going on in the big theater of hospitality. The luxurious sets are made for the very rich, the 0.1%, who don't care about limits on luxury. Price increases don't make much of a difference at these stages; the art of hospitality is painted with strokes of extravagant glamour, and the idea of compromise is strange. But this story throws a shadow over the larger audience, the 99%, in a way that is both subtle and important. As the curtains come up on luxury's big show, a huge group of people sit in the wings, their needs very different and often leaning toward value and cost. Here, the options are like a tapestry made of compromises, and the ideal is often pushed to the background by the facts of cost and access. As things change, the industry's story seems to be tuned more and more to the high-frequency sounds of the wealthy 0.1%. Even though this way is very appealing, it ignores the vast symphony of the majority, where the melodies of affordability, value, and quality beg to be heard and thoughtfully adapted. This is where industry tactics like Choice Hotels' attempts to buy Wyndham show that they are smart and flexible. Such movements signal a shift in attention to the new symphony of the 99%, which sees the possibility for a more welcoming, diverse, and fair story of hospitality. So, while the spotlight of luxury shines on the industry, let's not forget the power of numbers.
