While the collective memory of the COVID 19 pandemic may be waning, at FasterCures, we have been capturing lessons learned from the pandemic experience since 2020 that point toward opportunities to improve the biomedical research ecosystem for other health crises. We see tremendous opportunity to expand research collaborations, accelerate product development, embed real world data and evidence in regulatory review, speed clinical trial innovation, make clinical trials more accessible and importantly, ensure diverse racial and ethnic populations are represented in trials. Following up on the recommendations outlined in our January 2021 “Lessons Learned from COVID-19: Are There Silver Linings for Biomedical Innovation?” and the subsequent “Implementation Roadmap,” FasterCures released our newest report, “Protecting the Progress for Biomedical Innovation: A Post-Pandemic Scorecard.” How well are we doing on the lessons learned? From our engagement on the topics and interviews of 20 senior leaders in the field, we arrived at an overall grade of B-. While we uncovered a surprising number of positive developments, there remain significant impediments to protecting the progress that we saw during COVID-19. Explore the scorecard for information about the overall grade of B- as well as grades and details across five broad areas including: research collaboration, acceleration of product development, clinical trial design and execution, collection and use of real-world data and evidence, and addressing racial and ethnic disparities in health care and research. https://lnkd.in/egXZjTw7

Since the early days of the Human Genome Project, the vision was to eventually get preventive genomic screening at the beginning of life, where early detection could yield the greatest good. As Executive Director of ICoNS, I am thrilled to present the trailblazers in this field of medicine -- dedicated professionals, researchers, and clinicians working to usher a transformation in human health and wellbeing. If you want to see where global medicine is going, join us on October 5-6 at The Royal Institution in London! www.icons23.org #ICoNS23

With the goal of understanding the experiences of the extramural biomedical research community, The National Institutes of Health’s #UNITE Initiative convened 14 external listening sessions. The Summary Report describes the outreach efforts of the sessions, summarizes participants’ observations and proposed solutions, and presents information to support ongoing UNITE and #NIH efforts to identify and address structural racism and promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive biomedical and behavioral research enterprise.
