Today the Middlemen are starting our series on #RetailMedia ! There's a persistent narrative out there that retail media is new, but it's not. By going back far enough we can show there was a fully functioning retail media ecosystem in and around stores before we digitized it. The roots come in terms like #TradeMarketing #ShopperMarketing #CoOpMarketing and in this episode, Todd Sawicki and I go back 100 years to understand the conditions that started the relationships between brands and retailers. BTW, we don't as far back as Adam Heimlich goes in his fantastic google antitrust podcast which starts at the Civil War (definitely check that out). We *do* go back to how Piggly Wiggly invented the Supermarket and in-store shopping behavior, which was first detailed in a book called the Secret Life of Groceries. We'll also come full-circle in future episodes in this series to look at how today digital retail media tactics are both coming back into the store as Andrew Lipsman has shown in his recent posts, as well as how retail media is extending further into the world of Tom Triscari's gravity theory of data trades.
