When attending Virtual Career Fairs, there are some simple Dos and Don'ts that will make your experience better when engaging with recruiters. Here are 2 examples... Don't: Useless Jabber! Some platforms have a time limit. Brazen for example, gives us 10 minutes per person. Keep this in mind when you are engaging. Do not waste half of your time with chit-chat. Do: Browse the career sites before attending, so YOU can maximize YOUR time with that rep instead of wasting 5 minutes saying hello. Most Large companies have hundreds or even thousands of open position advertised. Fortune 500 company recruiters rarely have ALL positions memorized, for example. Come into the room at least knowing what you want to do and have some posted roles to discuss. That is how you get help. Having an actionable request from you for a specific position for us to act upon. I frequently witness applicants waste valuable time chit-chatting vs getting to the facts.

Tales from a career fair. Part 1 Today, I visited a local career fair to seek out helpful information to share. The most common advice: It’s an employer market so candidates must calm down and be more realistic in their demands. Gone are the days of yesteryear when candidates could shoot for the moon and still end up in the stars. The economy in a post-COVID world and recent tech sector layoffs in droves have caused a rebalancing in power. Employers dictate the hiring process and can move at a slower pace. Employers have the upper hand in negotiations. Candidates can choose to accept. How does this align with what you are seeing out there?

Senior Product Manager, Product Developer, Program Manager, Project Manager and Senior Category Manager -- Your "Go-To" Person
"Top-Ten Tips for Encouragement and the Unemployed" Tip #7: LEVERAGE YOUR RESOURCES Where to go when you don't know where to go next? * In addition to unemployment insurance, the Department of Labor (NY State) gives you access to Coursera classes, virtual and in-person workshops, virtual and in-person job fairs and a Career Counselor. Shout out to the most-supportive and encouraging Career Counselor anyone could envision! Thanks for spiffing up my resume (much more ATS friendly) and keeping my energy high, SB! * Libraries offer a good deal of support for career hunters, too -- check out your local library! Many offer career-coaching services, job-hunting tips, a map of online job-hunting sites and quiet places to set up shop. * Friends working at dream companies will share their honest impressions of the direction of the company, Executive Leadership, managerial styles, the workforce, advancement opportunities, salary and benefits impressions and the general corporate culture. If it sounds exciting to you, perhaps they will also share job openings, recruiter connections and their referrals for your employment. * Recruiters offer the most revealing insights if you can manage a quick conversation or exchange messages with them. These friendly folks can be quite candid. Find out what you can do to strengthen your application. And if you don't have the desired background for a particular company, redirect your efforts to companies valuing your expertise and aligning with your values. Be your authentic self!

There's a major professional in-person conference. Meetings. Career Fair. Happy Hours. Parties. Group 3-What takes place on the innanet: You can apply online and be considered for the jobs. Group 2-What takes place at the event: Applicants talking to the recruiters are a higher priority than Group 3. Group 1-What takes place after the meetings and career fair: People invited to attend X companies' Happy Hour/parties where the hiring managers are. They get priority over Group 2. Just dumping resumes online and sitting back hoping for a call isn't as effective as building relationships online and IRL with people. Because people hire people. It's in our book that's on Amazon. #beyourcareerbully #beyourbestbrand #beyourbestcareerarchitect #resumes
