A Bright Future for Colorado's Workforce: Axis & PCCSW Join Forces 🌟 In an incredible stride forward, Axis and Pueblo Community College Southwest (PCCSW), celebrate becoming Phase 2 Grant Recipients of the Opportunity Now Colorado Grant Program. An astonishing $1.3 million is set to invigorate and launch the HEAL SW, our innovative rural work-based learning program. Imagine a future where every aspiring healthcare professional in southwest Colorado has the tools, education, and support to thrive. That's where HEAL SW comes in—a program crafted to enrich our healthcare workforce and bridge the gap in healthcare career accessibility. Our heartfelt collaboration aims to power economic mobility and enable equitable labor force participation in southwest Colorado. "It's more than a grant; it's a commitment to our community," said Lisa Snyder, executive dean of PCC Southwest, "a pledge to foster growth and hope in our region's job market through superior healthcare education." Together with partners from healthcare organizations and schools around the region, we’re working to respond to the call for a diverse and capable workforce. The next generation of healthcare workers can be geared to meet the dynamic demands of in-demand healthcare jobs and to cater to the unique needs of our underrepresented populations. What's next? 💭 Too often, healthcare education happens in a bubble, disconnected from the communities our learners and graduates will serve.    This can result in a workforce ill-equipped to address real-world health challenges, particularly in underserved areas.    The consequences are severe… persistent health disparities, mistrust in the healthcare system, and missed opportunities for meaningful community health improvements.   Part of the solution is to transform our approach to healthcare education by embracing community engagement and collaboration.    This means: 1. Developing partnerships with diverse community organizations 2. Incorporating community voices in curriculum development 3. Providing students with meaningful community-based learning experiences 4. This is particularly thrilling to learn about, as young people with hearts bent toward health sciences are often steered into the comparative sterility of the lockstep march of STEM toward a medical school education. Integrating health science education directly into schools gives our teens not only the irreplaceable opportunity to apprentice, but to "try on" the bioscience field and explore the many facets of delivering care that are outside strict allopathic medicine, and to recognize their value NOW, not only at some impossibly far away time in the future, if ever. This initiative will enable young ones to feel valuable and contributing, which is the greatest tonic against the lure of escapism of substances, and ameliorate the helplessness and hopelessness that runs with the teen years, with, I anticipate, a concomitant reduction of the incidence of depression. BRAVO!
