Did you know that half of all approved modern medication came from molecules from wild species? 85 of the 175 molecules used to fight cancer are either natural or derive from wild species? ☘ That 11% of the medication considered as basic and essential by the World Health Organization came exclusively from flowering plants? 🌻 That there is "a significant positive relationship" between biodiversity and mental health? 🕊 We need #biodiversity not just for its beauty, its ability to sequester carbon, or its its ability to inspire. We need biodiversity for basic human health and wellbeing. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #snsdesignthinking The impact of noise pollution on both human health and the environment is indeed a critical concern. The correlation between noise exposure and various health issues, including hearing loss, cardiovascular diseases, and cognitive impairment, highlights the need for increased awareness and effective policies to address this often overlooked problem. Efforts to regulate anthropogenic noise, especially in marine environments, are crucial for preserving biodiversity and ensuring the well-being of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

For this week’s #FunFactFriday, let’s take a deep dive into the ocean – where bacteriophages play a crucial role. Targeting and infecting specific bacteria, they assist with the regulation of bacterial populations – helping maintain the balance of microbial communities in the ocean. And this balance is essential! It impacts nutrient cycling, the overall health of the marine environment, and can influence the carbon cycle, too. #Bacteriophages #OceanLife

Keeping an eye on phosphorus levels is a big deal for our Muskoka lakes. Too much of it can spell trouble for water quality and the well-being of our ecosystems. Monitoring is the key to maintaining the right nutrient balance, spotting areas with nutrient pollution, and taking the right steps. Long-term monitoring helps us track phosphorus changes and evaluate our strategies. All this data guides our decisions to safeguard the aquatic ecosystems in Muskoka. If you're curious about our watershed's phosphorus health, you'll find all the info you need in Chapter 2 of our 2023 Watershed Health Report Card.
